Hi everyone.

Recently got my new Agyo having moved down from a 4x4 having lots of fun so far, and much cheaper.

Has anyone converted theirs to LPG, if so was it worth it? any problems to watch out for, as I am thinking of doing mine, to give extra range and save on the price per litre over petrol

what do you think? good idea or not.

You are joking....right ? :g:

Where are you thinking of fitting the LPG tank?

I think an LPG conversion on an Aygo would be bordering on madness. I don't know the figures off the top of my head, but it would take many THOUSANDS of miles (probably YEARS in an Aygo) before you even recoup the cost of the conversion, and that's before you start to save a penny!

Even a small LPG tank would take up all of the boot, unless you're thinking of sacrificing the seats????

Another thing to consider. LPG prices are steadily creeping up as more people convert their big gas guzzling barges. Remember when diesel was much cheaper than petrol? (many moons ago, before it got so popular, and the thieving government taxed it to death)

Isn't your Aygo cheap enough to run already?

I would say don't touch it with a barge pole.....but that's just me.

HOWEVER, that all said, it takes allsorts, and if you do it make sure you post up some pics.etc

Hi Loftylad

Yeh had a few raised eye brows from my mates, over this as well as the Mr t dealers.

The Gov has pleadged to maintain the price difference between petrol and LPG for another 5 years, the LPG dealers say the tank fits in the spare wheel well giving and extra 250 or so miles of travel.

The sums add up to recouping the purchase costs in 3 years, leaving at least 2 years of cheaper motoring than I am enjoying now.

still dont know if im mad or just daft though.

Hi

Hmmm. maybe not as daft as I thought, then?

If you can definately recoup the purchase costs in 3 years, AND the Gvmt stick by that pledge, then maybe it could be a go-er.....?

I think I'd still be a little worried about the prospect of a 5 year old high mileage Aygo. Dont forget its a 1 litre car. How is it going to fare 5 years down the line? Will you definately still have/want it? 5 years is a long time to keep a car....especially if things start to go wrong and you get the "itch" to change. That would be one helluva expensive decision!

On a positive note, LPG conversions are both cheaper and more reliable nowadays.

Keep us posted!

In The Netherlands, the fine print explicitly states that an LPG-conversion will

void all warranty on the engine. This fine print is even on the brochure!!!

Converting an already cheap car with a one litre 3 cylinder engine is a crazy idea

Why don’t you just save the money you would have spent on the conversion and use it on fuel for the next 5 years?!

I like the idea, the tank would fit in the spare wheel well, so no space lost.

According to the calculator at http://www.greenfuel.org.uk you will save £430 per annum

on lpg doing 10,000 miles

Another idea would be to buy the diesel version, buy/make your own biodiesel reactor, and make

your own biodiesel. fromk waste oil from your local chippy. The derv engine is recommended for 30% biodiesel without modification.

Aygo diesel will only take upto 5% biodiesel (which is not really worth doing).

I suggest buying a Diesel Smart Car (about £5000, Tax band A) which regularly gets over 80mpg, or waiting for Peugeot/Citroen(PSA) to release their diesel electric hybrid in 2010.

Do you trust the government to keep LPG prices down? Regenerative braking is the way forward. Hence the rules in Formula 1 Racing allowing it in 2009 (to speed up technological development).

you will save more money driving carefully to be honest. i looked into this before the congestion charge was lifted. you can't go on the channel tunnel, you might not be eligible for any tax breaks (believe it or not the congestion charge is very very specific on which lpg cars are eligible) and you won't get much of your investment back when you sell it. also the govt has scrapped any grants to assist you.

keep your tyres correctly inflated, avoid stop starting quickly, don't race people and keep to 65 and you'll probably find you'll get better mpg and save that way. if you are worried about the environment then you are probably already doing your best in the little aygo!
