Verso T180 Bad Mpg - Am I The Only One

I am not sure if anyone else can help. My dealer claims no one has reported a problem to Toyota (Anywhere) but I get really bad MPG

I have had my VERSO T180 for 6 months and done 13,000 miles & it was serviced bang on time.

For the type of travelling I do I should get 43-49 MPG out of my car, this is according to Toyota literature and the UK government figures for this car.

I get 32 MPG at best most of the time

I have tried everything from different fuels to driving like a girl (Sorry ladies but its the best description I could think of)

I have even done 150 miles in one go on cruse control and in 6th gear at 70mph and got a staggering 34mpg

The dealer says everything on the vehicle is fine and that I am the only person in the UK to report this - Is this true..?

I really like the space in the car and the driving position but if I can not get better MPG I will have to send it back to Toyota for a full refund under misrepresentation and probably go back to a Ford or a Nissan.

My last car was a Mondeo 2.2st diesel and in that I got 50+ MPG with my driving so I am looking at £1,000 extra on fuel every year so any answers or other people with this problem would be a big help to know.

Cheers

I don't know about Versos, but you'll find plenty of threads on that engine giving poor MPG in other Toyotas.

And check out also the thread on the Lexus Owners Club where the same engine in the Lexus IS220 is causing a lot of concern.

I've done about 55,000 miles in my T180 and driving very carefully can just about manage 40 - 42 mpg, driven 'normally' it's more like 36 but that's with a lot of steep hills around here. Having said that you figure of 32 does seen very thirsty - how many miles are you getting to a tankful?

Remember that cruise control isn't the most fuel efficient way to drive as it won't take maximum advantage of downhill slopes.

Hi,

There has been a bit of fuss regarding the fuel issue of the T180's. On the avensis forum there is a whole thread about this. The 180's seem quite sensitive to how the're driven.

I tend to find that around town a light throttle and 2,000 rpms deliver resonable mpg. I can average 35-36 like this according to the trip computer.(This can lie, though up to 2-3 mpg, but its usually ok).

If i want quicker acc, like a slip road etc, then its good practice to use more revs (upto 3,000) and on every gearchange the revs drop back to 2,000ish, so you're keeping in the power band. My friend at the dealer says that big throttle at low revs chews through fuel.

I usually get 40-42 on the motorway, but if I give it some beans then its 30 mpg!

Considering the combined mpg fig of 41.5 then i don't think these figures are bad. My work aygo does 46-50 mpg, combined 61.4!

I'd recommend the BP Ultimate, or the better V-power diesel, as the engine is quieter and more responsive at low revs.

Be careful out there!

Count Shufula ;)
