Corolla Cambelt

We have a 1998 Corolla and have never changed the cambelt as the car has only done 18,000 miles.

It looks in good condition but the main dealer keeps pushing the 60,000 or 5 years guidance from the manufacturer.

It has only been used locally, in the main, and almost always garaged overnight. The car's pretty much perfect and has just been serviced/MOT'd (last done 2 years ago). The mileage has been spread evenly i.e. less than 2,000 a year.

I'm aware that better safe the sorry is always a factor but, given the very low mileage and the engine type (1.6GS), does it really have to be replaced? There are no noises whatsoever.

Toyota cam belts are very reliable, unlike some other manufacturers, however the belt is made of rubber (amongst many other things) and will deteriorate over time, regardless of mileage. The belt for your model is £26.30 plus fitting, you cant tell by looking or listening to it, to see if it needs replacing. If your keeping the car it is a no brainer, it should be replaced, as not replacing it could cost you a lot more
