T Sport Engine Problem!

Hi guys and gals,

A quickie really!!! How many of you have noticed your T Sports using oil?

The reason why I ask is my CTS engine is knackered, i've run it bone dry by accident. It was serviced 5,500 mile ago by my local Mr T. Never had a problem with their work and the car in all honesty has never had a problem. But... over this 5,500 miles its used up 4.5 litres of oil which indicates a serious engine issue (in my eyes). I know it had been properly serviced because I do check levels after any servicing just to be safe...

There seem to be no obvious signs of a leak either... so :(

Has anybody else had similar problems and what was it due too?

Thanx

gutted - are you covered? what age and mileage? serviced at lindops i pressume? they use semi synthetic - no good for 10k. i know of several occasions where lindops have tried to charge for service items they havent changed - on one occasion they tried to charge me for oil and a filter they hadnt changed! i believe there was a few issues with some early 2zz-ge's but i think most of them were celica's - i'm pretty sure toyota replaced as they knew of the problem. hope you get it sorted. in the eyes of manufacturers a litre of oil is acceptable use in 1k...........

Horrible mate...what age and mileage was the car? Touch wood mine has been fine so far, in 8,000 miles it hasnt used much(about 80% full). I always do a weekly check on my cars for oil and water.

Did the oil light come on?

AE102 is right, 1 litre per 1,000 miles is deemed as acceptable by most manufacturers..

Well the car has done 47k and is an 03 plate

Last service was carried out a 42k and that was a 50k service, i've had the last two services done at my local Mr T which is Lindops (Wrexham) and Before that it was always serviced at Bentleys Warrington which is where I bought the car which had 24k on the clock.

I think the general consences on the T Sport is its very unusual for it to have gone. I've heard of the 1 litre per 1,000 miles rule! The guy I spoke to at Lindops said that as far as he knew its around 400mls of oil per 600miles at the worst which should be tolerated

As for the oil light, it came on at the time it happened, so I had no real warning. I think whats happened is the oil has gone to the top to push the cams up into lift but the oil has then starved the sump and hence dried up the crank... well thats my theory/thoughts

Do you guys check the oil when the engine is cold or warm?

Is it warm because you need the oil to circulate etc ?

Also does the oil have to be between the two dots on the dipstick? I have forgotten... Sorry Rolley for Hi-Jacking Thread

No mods, completely standard car!!!

mac12 your best checking the oil when you car has been standing for some time and when the oil is cold, that way you get an accurate gauge of how much oil is in the sump as it all sinks to the bottom. You also have to have oil between the two marker points (oh how I should have taken my own advice lol)

Been to the garage that has my car today, and I asked them how often should you check the oil, so they consulted the toyota handbook.... Toyota specify that everytime you refuel the car you should check you oil levels... I think the term that you can use is 'well and truly covering their a*#e'

Anyway has anybody noticed what kind of oil consumption their car does?

The handbook says to check with a warm engine - but leave it 10mins after running for the oil to drain back down.

I've had mine for a year and about 10k miles. Never had to add any oil.

Doesnt sound too good, I read here that some of you guys say if you use lift a lot it may burn up a touch of oil, also if you use fully synthetic.

My 02 plate, was 42.7.k at last service (september) - now almost 46k doesnt seem to have used any at all (just above the full mark) and I check the oil at least every two weeks with it being a high revving engine and all. Thats the standard oil, not the fully synthetic.

One of my pals - friends ran his CTR bone dry and it blew, never did find out why it had lost so much oil. Still if its not a leak via a seal and its the engine, its likely to be a problem with worn cylinders or another component? I dont think the performance would have been up to scratch if that was the case, low compression and all.

I only do about 6k miles over a year, and if i did not top it up the level would be below the bottom of the dip stick, just need to check it every month.

same - only check when warm as things expand when warm.

same again - never added any oil. maybe time to get rid of me t sport - just bought another GXi............. how corolla's are meant to feel!!

Gutted for you, if there was no leak and the filler cap/dipstick was on properly and you didn't see any blue smoke where has it gone?

On the technical side, does anyone know if its possible the dealer put the wrong viscosity of oil in that could have burned off clean and done this? I have seen it where BMW 530d/X5 3.0d have had the wrong oil in and they burn it off clean and the engine seizes. However i am unsure if the 1.8 VVTLI is so susceptible to this occurring.

Any thoughts?

i use a different viscosity and dont burn any oil. a few years ago i had a problem with a certain brand of oil - must have tasted good as engine couldnt get enough! changed oil and problem was sorted - i think it must have been a common problem as they revised the oil. i would compression check the engine.

Very much doubt it mate, if you read the manual you can more or less use most grades of oil. 5w30 is recommended, but im running 10w40 millers XSS at the moment, 4 Toyota dealers i spoke too said they felt 5w30 is too thin...seems to be running well on the 10w40... i think ae102 is running 5w40 fully synthetic too.

Highly recommend Millers oils www.millersoils.com if anyone is due a change..

Sorry to hear of the original posters trouble here.

My engine uses nothing noticeable between the 10K it did between the last change. It's standard and lift is used almost constantly. It's just done 70K miles.

Cheers.

Cheers Rolley, I read that it is better to check when the engine is warm because oil expands when hot and contracts when cold.

Maybe the problem is that the oil is too thin for your car? I remember on my last car the oil used was too thin burned quicker. Isn't this the same case for the CTRs?

We will have to see what the actual problem is because its not been fully investigated as yet. In order for my local garage to get involved I would need to give them the go ahead to strip the engine and that'll cost me.

I've got Toyota customer relations involved now to see what they say and they've given me the 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles which in all honesty is taking the mick.... The guy at my garage has quoted 800mls per 1200 miles is the maximum tolerated, supposedly said by the toyota technical team... So i'm believing my garage at the moment... So hopefully it will be investigated very soon so i'll let you know the outcome.

Id a short engine replaced on my car, i never found out why. I keep meaning to ring and find out the reason. prob an oil consumption prob, piston rings and/or wear on the cylinder walls. 50k it went at too. Doesnt burn a drop now, it happened when the previous owner had it. Wasnt there a prob with the V8 jag engines before, the high sulfur content in Uk petrol at the start of the decade causing wear to the cylinder walls or something along those lines, dont know what the story is with the petrol now. Earlier xj8 had this prob. Alfa engines have high oil consumption, expect a bit more than 50k from a toyota engine thou.

Least they cant fob you off and say oh they all do that sir, cause mine doesnt burn a drop, running on 5w30 semi also. !Removed! thing shouldnt do either, amount of money they cost.

bad luck,

I'm running 0w40 in mine but i change my oil every 6 months. I run 0w for the cold engine performance, however i've only done 20k so its no where near what you have done.
