well ive got my gti twin cam off the road project, had the clocks out to fit new bulbs and holders, so anyway they were out and tried starting it last night and it wouldnt so i thought it might of ran out of petrol so off i went to the petrol station and got a tenners petrol put it in still nothing, took out the plugs and cleaned them still nothing took off the 17mm bolt(where the petrol goes into engine) and tried starting it and nothing came through, put the clocks back in and the engine management light was on, so do you think it could be the fuel pump with no fuel coming through or as the engine management light is on would none come through anyway? thanks for any help you may be able to give me, cheers ian

The fuel pump on the Gti-16 is a fickle thing, but has few proplems. Let me explain.. Fuelling is controlled by the ECU. It will only pump fuel when needed. Not all the time, like you may expect. Initially, to pressurise the system, but then no more fuel is pumped untill the engine fires. To check fuel pump function, and also to access ECU fault codes. You need to get to know your diagnosis port. At this point, a haynes manual would come in really handy!

To check the fuel pump function. Turn the ignition on(dont start the engine). Then, by using a suitable short length of wire(known as a jumper wire). Connect the terminals FP and +B in the check connector(located by the left-hand front suspension turret). As the terminals are connected, there should be pressure in the fuel rail.

I'm not sure, whats up with your 'rolla, but if there is a fault code. That may indicate the problem. I know the latter Gti, had a road speed sensor relation to the clocks, so it maybe that you would need to have the clocks fitted, in order to gain function out of the ECU. If you google 4AGE fault codes you can gain the information to diagnose any displayed code. This is also acheived by connecting terminals in the check connector.
