Mud Flaps

I purchased a new Corolla Verso recently and noticed after a motorway trip that the tailgate was almost white from road salt. Presumably a vortex is caused behind the flat back and wondered if anybody has fitted mud flaps. Has this solved the problem? Apart from the cost, are there any "cons" to fitting mud flaps all round? Any advice would be appreciated.

I only have the mudflaps on the frontside :) don,t now yet of i will put them on the backside cause i have 18"wheels with 225-40-18 Tyres ( maybe the look to small compare to the tyre )
