hi guys i have a celica st202 with a st205 engine conversion i was running the standard gt gearbox with a up rated clutch but the clutch eventually packed in si bought a MR2 turbo box with a LSD and have fitted that along with a exedy paddle clutch from eBay, the problem im having is when the car is startde there is like a grinding noise this is when the car is out of gear and the noise is the same when the car is in gear i think it must be a clutch prob as it also does it when the gears are not selected. i bought the box from a very reliable source who assures me it has only covered 50 k and works perfect this why i think it may be clutch

could it be gearbox bearings maybe??

sounds daft but try bump starting car see if it still does it, i had the same on my gt4 and it was the starter motor not disengaging properly. besides its easier to remove a starter than a gearbox, so may be worth checking

mine did excatly that! its the bearings in the box. i went and bought a new box just to be safe but im sure you could replace the bearing but how much it would cost to take the box apart and replace the bearings, i dont know. I would get a machanic to look at it and put it up on the ramp and start it. if its the bearings then you should be able to hear it quite clearly! even put it in gear on the ramps and listen. your meachanic should have a listening device that he can put on the box to hear it clearer (like 1 of those doctors things that im not even going try to spell lol)

the bad thing about mine was that the bear was makin the shaft vibrate and oil got onto the clutch so that had to be replace too, just the plate i think tho.
