wondering if anyone can help - today i have been getting me GXi ready for an engine swap, only the shafts to remove now :D on this GXi which is a 93 there is an oil cooler...... my old GXi didnt have one and it was a 94 model. did they come with these as standard? i have to tap and thread the block on my newer engine to fit the pipe - althought the hole is already there for it it just needs drilling through. i know imports usually have them but it aint an import and it doesnt look like a retro fit? i'll get it sorted tomorrow leaving me the weekend to get the new engine plumbed in - fingers crossed

Oil coolers work! So its worth perservering. Its undoubtably the best way forward; when it comes to engine cooling, and its just like 'yota to make it an easy provisioning. So you can get on, and fit what you want!

The oil cooler circuit returns to the sump, and there is a provision on the sump to drill and tap up to, but its the oil coolers feed that may be tricky. I wouldn't advise tapping and drilling the block by any means. There is an easy to source Oil feed pipe, incorporated into an adapter plate, that fits behind the oil filter. Almost every Toyota that has an oil cooler as standard will have one.

I haven't much experience of Corolla's newer than AE92, but i reckon there are plenty in the scrap yard that would match up.

thanks for that - i have the oil feed pipe that go's behind the filter with adaptor. but there are two pipe's, i presume the other is the return. there is a dummy hole for ot that needs tapping to fit. if you look on your gti you'll see the pipe thats above the sump. shame it aint fitted to the sump as it would be an easy swap.

I dont think that the 'other' pipe on the plate is a return though. Its an auxilary feed isn't it? The second pipe on the Gti's bracket has a blanking bolt. I'm pretty sure that its another feed. Otherwise, why would the Gti need a return to the sump!

Maybe you should tap the sump, high, like on the Gti. Or maybe get a Gti Pan. Hope i'm more of a help here, than hinderance! I've got a spare Gti sump pan if its any good.

nice one Brad :thumbsup: i decided against drilling the block just incase............... when i looked at it i wondered why they hadnt fitted it to the sump then things would have been much simpler! i will take you up on that sump as that will solve my problem - should fit fine as 7a is same as 4a apart from the block being taller to get the extra dislpacement. i'm not sure what pipe does what tbh as i have never come across one before but it will soon become clear? thanks again for that as you have saved me a headache and i didnt not want to use the oil cooler until the other engine is reinstalled............ a forged 7a-fte?

i've managed to get the engine out today - no the fun begins trying to get the other one back in. would have been a bit easier but someone had mashed a few nuts changing the balljoints in the past :cowboy: need some suggestions as how to recon the 7a i've taken out....

most of the E11 range with the 4A-FE engine have oil coolers, with a return on the sump and everything, try sourcing on of their sump pans?

:thumbsup: looks like i'll have to check me local scrappies - got a couple near by so. strange how this GXi has one and me old one didnt? i would say thats how its done 135k - no noise from the rings, just all the gaskets have perished.

Hey Mike. Thanks, in collaboration, i've learnt a bit more about 'yota oil coolers. :D

Its intersting to note, like you may have done. My first thought was that the oil cooler circuit, naturally would travel from the oil filter to the oil cooler and then back to the filter to enter the oil ways via the adapter plate on the back of the filter. In fact, this is not how they function. The adapter plate on the Gti has a one way pressure relief valve. I thought it was an auxilary feed, its not. There is only one feed. This only opens under a certain pressure at which point oil is allowed to travel through the oil cooler and back to the sump. Therefore oil cooling is not a constant. All oil does not flow through the cooler before hitting the gallery's, but when the system gains enough pressure, then the excess pressured oil travels through the cooler and back to the sump. This seems like a stoopid way to cool the oil, as all cooled oil is put straight back to the sump to mix with the rest of the oil. The outcome, i suppose is a general cooling of the whole system. From the sump up. Maybe 'yota thought this to be better economy, i dont know!

just put the engine in - got a huge list of jobs at the mo. when i've got things heading where i want to be i will get the oil cooler done. the engine i've fitted is coming back out once i've rebuilt the other engine so its lower on the list now. cars not on the road yet as the timing is a fair bit off and got an one of the shafts not locating - just the clip not lining up from past experiences. i've stripped out the rear seats and removed parcel shelf ect and shaved 46.5kg off - considering removing PAS next and possibly the ABS too....... lots of to keep me busy...... got some goodies in the garage waiting to go on
