Key Fob Battery Replacements

I think my Battery is dead. Well almost dead as I actually use the key hole to lock the door at times because the buttons on the key don't work. The problem is if I do it the other way around the alarm will go off - so there are times where I am standing outside my car pressing the button till my thumb is numb...

I was wondering if anyone knew a cost effective way of replacing my batteries. Or is there anything I need to know about changing the Battery.

I went to Mr T a few months ago and asking for the batteries and he said £20 per fob. To me - that is a bit expensive.

Please could anyone help me out! Cheers!

Anywhere that can change watch batteries will be able to do it for you!

For example my local Watch Hospital changed the Battery for my last car.

Perhaps I am barking up the wrong tree here, but is it not possible for you to get a small screwdriver and change the Battery yourself? That's the most cost effective solution.

I've just taken mine apart, remove the black cover from the electronics inside, the Battery is nestled in there, and it's a CR2016.

Takes about two minutes.

£20 for that. They're having a laugh.

Send it to me and it'll cost you for the batteries and stamp!

Cheers.

That's great news.

So there is no special battery needed - no special procedures...

Cool thanks mate!

Well you need the right Battery obviously, but they're readily available e.g. on eBay you can probably by half a dozen for a few quid, or pay the same price for one at the supermarket or failing that a watchmaker.

You would think all Toyota / Lexus would use the same Battery, but actually there are at least three different types, so unless someone knows which Battery you need you'll have to open it up to find out. The code will be on the back e.g. CR1616

[EDIT]Ooops I see Rolla battery listed above by panners CR2016 - his post wasn't there when I made mine[/EDIT]

Avoid touching the battery with your fingers; use a piece of clean cloth or kitchen roll to hold it.

You shouldn't need to re-program after changing the battery though it's possible that that will be necessary.

Cheers Guys for the replies,

That's the thing - I would give it a go but I wondering if you had to re-programme the key or the batteries were a special one that only Toyota made. How would I go re-programming the keys if I needed to? Thanks!

You guys recon a Battery from eBay will do? My spare key Battery is almost dead too haha so maybe replacing both will be a good idea.

CR2016. Brilliant - Cheers.

Yep, one Battery per fob.

You can probably get them from a large Tesco, or as someone else mentioned, a watch repair shop.

Don't get 'em off eBay, you'll get ripped off on postage!

Cheers.

If you're buying just one, that's almost certainly true.

But if you buy a few (don't go mad they won't last forever) you'll get a good per unit price.

£1.99 from MAPLIN £1.95 from screwfix

Think the key fob may loose its code if you take over 60 seconds to change the Battery - is that right?

I have been looking and seen some Duracell ones 3 batteries for £4 posted... is that alright?

I would need two as I think my spare is also dead.

edit: I have got Maplins just here around the corner from my work. I will pop in there during lunch and see if they got any cheap ones in stock..

Thanks for all the comments guys! Much appreciated.

Check out C.P.C. electronic wholesaler ( but they do everything, car accessories inc ) £1.85 + vat for a pack of 5, sometimes on monthly offers at £1 or so. And MR T wants just under £6 as part of the full service. Just type batteries into search box to get started. Small order cost for delivery, free over £40 but so many goodies here you can soon add it up.

Thanks for the replies.

I was going to get this done over the weekend and see how much it costs to get done at the watch specialist (as I need to get links taken off my watch too).

Interestingly I got my spare key out to get that Battery replaced as remembered it was dead too. I tried it on my car and it worked perfectly. I then used my spare key all weekend and it was great - for once I didnt have to push the button down so hard just to get the doors to open.

I saw the batteries in Maplins around from my work for £1.99 - but I wasn't too sure about the brand. I would probably get them from there because if they don't work I can try to take them back for refund.

Cheers,

I bought some at the weekend from Maplin.

The one I fitted to my spare key was stamped Maxell on the rear, which is a reasonable brand. No guarantee they're all that make though.

Good luck taking batteries back if they don't work. I suspect the shop will think you're returning the dead one that you were replacing.

I was thinking the same thing.

If I showed them the brand then hopefully they will understand. Maxell doesn't sound too bad as I have heard of that - but the one I saw was Gold something....unless that was the name of the Battery by Maxell..

Golden Power is the brand on the packaging.

I bought a few types all with Golden Power packaging.

The CR1616s appear to have Maxell branding on the batteries. The CR2016s have no branding on the batteries themselves.

But hey, it's a Battery and it cost £2. If it lasts a year I'll be happy, and if it doesn't I won't buy them from Maplin again. I'm sure they'll be fine though.
