Celica 1996 Gt - Heater Matrix/core

Hi all,

Think my heater core is fried in my '96 Celica GT (Note: NOT GT-Four). Quote for repair was a touch steep and beyond me at this point in time. To get round this I've managed to hunt down a replacement and buy myself a Chilton manual. The problem i'm now faced with is this:

Chilton Manual is practically useless

I can't find any useful guides to remove or re-install the dash online or offline

I have the time to make these repairs but would ideally like pointing in the right direction of a walkthrough if possible. This is where you come in ;).

Anyone able to help??

changing the heater matrix is a relatively straight forward job - but it takes a long time. It's usually a Dash-out job which will mean steering wheel off, glovebox/centre console and a thousand hidden nuts, bolts and screws.

Set aside at least a day when you attempt this.

Cheers fella,

I know whats involved but wondered if there were any step by step guides. I'd settle for a rough guide if i'm honest ;)

Ok,

I took the plunge and decided to replace this myself. Couldn't really find any helpful documents, guides or walkthroughs but undetered i proceeded to take my car to bits ;).

So far its taken me nine hours or so to get the Matrix/core out and took around a minute to replace the unit once accessed lol! In the process of putting it all back together at mo' but taking a break and thought i'd post this.

I've documented as much as i can and taken video where possible so i intend to provide as much info for anyone else who may need to do this. This info will cover all aspects of dash/wheel removal as i had to take eeeeevvveeerrrryyything out. So if you wanna change your steering wheel, i'm your man; wanna change your diles just give me a shout lol!

Ok, back to it; will let you all know how i do :D

Good effort mate,

As I said ( and you're no doubt discovering ) it's fairly straight forward but takes forever !

When you're done, figure out how long it took you and then multiply that by a mechanics hourly rate !

Good luck

18 hours total. A lot of that was time wasted via trial and error, I could do it considerably quicker now i know whats what.

I have a 95 GT and was going to attempt to replace the evaporator myself. I need to remove the dash for that too and was wondering if you could give me any tips to make it easier/faster for me.

Thanks!
