Couple Of Important Questions

Just got my Celica and after looking and realising where the coolant bottle is ive found its below the mimimum and needs topping up desperately. What coolant should i be buying as i will go to Halfords and get some, also do Gen 7's use abit of coolant or should i be worried?

secondly checked the oil and its at the minimum so im going to top that up aswel, what oil is best?

Its due a service in the next 3k miles so my guess is that the previous owner did not take care of the car and check the levels regularly.

Also how do i get to the coolant seems to be a big plastic bit in the way?

Thanks

Oil - 5W30.

Coolant - Will prob be longlife or extended life coolant. This is not the normal stuff you buy. You don't have to buy Toyota coolant it can be any extended/long life coolant. The only difference between makes is the colour.

mate if u've just bought ur gen 7, i'd keep an eye on the oil level as the 140s have had oil consumption problems, and ur having to top urs up....y was it low in the first place......

5w 30 is that better oil to use if youve got the oil problem im putting 10w 40 in mine and it drinks it like petrol

Toyota seem to use Castrol GTX Magnatec 10w-40.

If your coolant is a red colour, then pop down to Toyota and get a top up bottle, if its any other colour go to local motor factor place show it to 'em and ask 'em for some more!

This is from the Celica owners manual....

"If you use SAE 10W-30 or a higher viscosity engine oil in extremely low temperatures, the engine may become difficult to start, so SAE 5W-30 or 5W-20 engine oil is recommended.

Using 5W-20 oil ensures the highest fuel economy."

10W-30 is no good below -18*C. So you can use 10W-30 as we don't normally reach that cold here, though as they'll be the same price on the shelf, you might as well get 5W-30. That way you know you've got all round weather protection, plus it seems nicer for the engine. I've not seen any 5W-20, so I'll stick to my 5W-30.

If you have the 190BHP, you need to use 10W-30 it says. Unless in really cold places (as above), then use 5W-30.

OK cool thanks, what does SAE mean?

I wonder whether to hunt down some 5W20 to see if it helps fuel economy!
