Idle

Hey all,

I know that there are a lot of T-Sport owners on here with a funny idle...anyone had any joy curing it? My car is running 100%, but every so often especially when the car is warming up the revs drop to like 500rpm then rise to normal.

Cleaned Throttle body yesterday and it didnt make any difference, also replaced spark plugs too...

Any ideas??? Air Flow Meter?

How often does the fuel filter need changed in these??

Mine has started to do that, drop and rise when in traffic. Iv a spare air flow meter, try swapping it when i get my car back, see if it makes any diff and get back to you, its at the garage again. Noticed a rattle coming from the engine. Not sure what it is, hoping for the best, prepared for the worst.

It would be much appreciated mate  Hope you get sorted with the rattle, hopefully it will be something minor...the 2zzge isnt the quietest of 4cyl engines though....

hi black cts, dont know about your idel but i can answere your quiry on the fuel filter as i recently asked toyota about this as i do all my own servicing, they said it never needs replacing as its located inside the fuel tank and is self cleaning or somthing like that, hope that helps.

How do you find your idle when warm, is there a very small shake in the car, little bit like older cars used to be, when you knew for sure the car was running, not like with new cars where their is very little shake if anything when the cars standing still. By the way when you remove the oil cap can you feel a little bit of a blow out of it, just is this normal for them. Wondering am i down on compression on one cylinder and that causing the little shake.

Prob be next fri before i can try it for you, i have to leave it to the garage for the week, live down the country during the week so wont get it back till back home again

The car was compression tested by Toyota before I bought it and it was perfect...regards the shake...i havent really noticed....maybe very slight..def no worse than other cars....would your shake not be down to a worn engine mount??? Havent noticed any blow out of the oil cap...

hope you get it sorted mate!

have the same mither! the only person off here that got it sorted was one of the guys with a compressor - leak on the intake. i tried cleaning and changing plugs but to no avail. i pointed it out to a mechanic friend of mine and he said if the engine is "searching" you have a leak after the AFM. spray carb cleaner around all gaskets on the inlet and see if the revs rise - if they do the carb cleaner is being drawn into the inlet. i have been meaning to resurface and regasket the inlet but have had other cars to do. does seem a common problem that most mr t's are unable to solve...........

Ill get him to have a look at the mounts. I was thinking that cause a short engine was replaced on it back in 06, wouldn't know what the workmanship could have been like, even though it was toyota warranty work. Prob related to the rumbling more than likely. Ill know the damage Monday when i ring him anyway

Sorry for the thread hijack ;)

Well you have FSH and it would prob be a good thing if it is related to the warranty work, then it would be up to Toyota to sort it. 7yrs-120,000 miles is the extended warranty period on the oil issue...

hi my revs dont drop to 500 but they do fluctuate a little bit from 700 to 1000rpm and 800 being normal this only happens every couple of mins or so. ive put this down to the change in weather

I havent had any problems with mine, but i called Toyota Customer Services to find out what the story is and they told me that they were aware of the problem and extended the warranty to 120,000 miles and 7 years...

Does the extension cover the VVTLi? as i thought it was only the 1.8 VVTi's that were affected by oil consumption.

  • 2 weeks later...

Rite black cts, sorry for th delay

Changed the air flow this morn, i also cleaned the throttle body with a bit of carb cleaner, gave a little squirt in the hole for the idle control valve and she is idling grand now. Sitting just above 800 with hardly if any movement in rpm. Smoother idle too.

What ill do is try this one for the week, then put the old one back in and see how she runs on that one. I noticed the rpm fluctuating at the traffic lights during the week, moving up and down every couple of secs. Annoying!!!

She seams 100% for now, brought it for a spin, let it sit idling outside the house for a while and it didnt move

By the way there is a lad on e bay selling air flow meters for the Toyota, ox flow i think his name is. Toyota are like 160euro, this guys like 60. Not a genuine part thou

Thats the one thats in the car now and no lights on, car running grand.

Said id let you know anyhow

dredge a thread from the past.

i have the exact same issue! basically when the car is like ~ 90% warm the revs at idle drop to 500-1000rpm... as soon as its warmed up to proper temp, or i put the headlights on, the revs sit at 800-900rpm idle...

was it the AFM??

anyone else have this?

afm = air flow meter, sensor in the intake.

mine hadnt done it for a long time - done it a few times in the last few weeks again. cleaned the afm to no avail. gonna try get to the bottom of this again! gonna check for leaks again and work through the associated sensors but need to know the specs - ie what resistance should they show?

what is the best way to clean a lambda sensor?
