2003 Rav4 D-4d Sounds Like Exhaust Leak When Starting From Cold

When I first start up I get this sound which resembles an exhaust leak. After inspecting the exhaust all seems normal; no rust patches, joints seem good. The thing is the noise disappears fairly quickly before I have time to locate the sound and doesn't reappear till the engine is stone cold again (30 mins or more before I can try again)

Has anyone come across a similar problem?

My worry is 1) could this be something more sinister like a leak from the turbo etc. 2) Am I going to create any lasting damage by using the car with this problem.

I have an MOT booked for next week so I am going to ask the dealer while I am there but thought I'd try here in the meantime in case it was something fairly straight forward that I could fix myself.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the club.

I can only think that it is one of the emmission control valves in the engine bay. These close off when the engine is warm and does not necessarily indicate a fault. When the engine is cold lift the bonnet and see if it comes from around the engine and then let us know what you find.

Cheers

Ok here are my findings based on your recommendations.

When initially starting up from cold all sounded normal until I gave it a little rev then leaking sound was instantly there, the sound didn't gradually creep up as I would have thought if it were a leak which sounds in keeping with what you suggested. Also the sound disappears when you rev then engine and then only returns once the engine has returned to idle speed. The sound is definitley coming from somewhere near the engine, I got underneath the car and it doesn't seem to be coming from the manifold or any other exhaust joints.

Is this in keeping with whatt you'd expect when the emmision control valves are in normal operation?

Many thanks for your quick response previously, it is much appreciated

this sounds like either a type of pulse air valve which will sound like a leaking exhaust or it may be the egr valve on initial warm up this is normal and like you say disappears as engine warms up

Take no notice of the pigeon man from alcatraz, he's just jealous because he runs a moonshine powered jet engine.

However he does have a diesel powered LR so should be familiar with the noises of any associated equipment to refine the engine to post war standards. Oh but wait a minute.......................

I daren't use any diesel trying. I'm sure you could come up with some alternative fuel with all the bothwell resource. Then you could give me royalties for thinking that you could do it and we'll both be rich.
