Brake Pad Wear

Corolla In Normandy
 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi I have got a 2007 French bought LHD Corolla 1.4D4D hatch and have noticed today while cleaning the alloy wheels that the brake caliper clearance to the disk is only about 3 mm. The car has done just over 22,000 kilometres from new in 13 months, bought new by us. The brakes work great but they do squeal lightly under braking now.

How long do brake pads usually last on the corolla? As it looks in my opinion the pads need changing. Anyone have an idea how much the toyota dealer would charge for the pads to be changed?

Many thanks James.

Did you actually look at the PAD thickness? The Caliper to disk distance isn't an indication as the pads move within the caliper.

Unless you're always on the brakes, I can't see the pads being that worn after only 22,000 Km unless there's a problem with them.

If you do need pads, then shouldn't be too expensive, but unless you're a heavy user of the brakes, then I'd be asking Mr T why they've worn out so quickly.

Ask to see the pads that come out and see if they've worn evenly. If they haven't then that suggests some kind of problem which I wouldn't expect with such a new car.

Thanks for the reply. So the actual brake pad moves towards the disk independantly of the caliper, in that case they have about 10 mm of pad left then. Dah!

Forum posters have also mentioned that when they get into the rear of the car they get a creak from the rear. I sometimes get a creak every now and then but only seems to do it when its quite cool. Apparently they say its the Handbrake mechanism on the forum.

The car has been very reliable and I get about 50mpg on mostly rural roads and its surprisingly nippy for a 1.4. I had a 20 kilometre short burst of speed of 160 KPH and overtook BMW's and Merc's when I drove down to Bergerac on a 7 hour road trip of 640 kilometres stopping for half an hour.

The only very few complaints I have are:

The rainwater that drips onto the seats when you open the door and you can't have the window open half an inch when its raining as it drips into the inside also. Window wind deflectors would solve having the window open when its raining and should be a standard fitment. I have fitted seat covers to help protect the seats.

Our fuel filler cap seems to leak diesel out down the metallic paint, (Cideral Blue) even with low fuel levels. Will get the dealer to look at this when it goes for its service. Cheap plastic cap!! Everything else is very good.

I am actually a 28 year old volvo fan at heart and had a 1986 740GLE estate which I loved and part exchanged him for the corolla. I will get a Volvo 940 Turbo estate as well, either a Celebration model or a CD. James.
