New Ecu?

Hi

Firstly thanks for the info reg cambelt on my first post. I've now had car serviced which cost a fortune..had to have a new almbda sensor fitted which cost me £500!!..plus brakes etc. Car is now running great..except eml light came back on!..so took it back to garage, who were very helpful. After lots of testing they told me that one of the sensors isnt working properly, becuase it is receiving the incorrect voltage from ecu..wont pretend to know what this means!!!...so they will test on Monday as it could be faulty wiring, or new ecu is needed!

I know this is going to cost lots of money if it is ecu though...anyone had similar experience?. (ps mak sensors etc cleaned...engine light still came back on)

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul, when you say you had a lamda sensor fitted, was it just one? The UK roadster has three, and I found that once I changed the one faulty 02 sensor the EML came back on in a short space of time with the other sensor reading faulty. In the end I changed all three.

Get the error code read and don't be tempted to go back to the garage to have them fitted if the sensors are faulty, £500 seems an extortionate amount of money :o ! There's plenty of info and help here at TOC to do it yourself

Amy's right about it possibly being another sensor but DON'T pay out 100's of pounds when they can be done at a fraction of the cost and it's not Mickey mouse stuff either.

Check THIS post out

I know it is a Celica but the lambda sensor I used is exactly the same as ours. ;)

thanks for the replies..seems like i've paid way over the odds!..from now on will research problem before taking it to garage. I must admit though garage i have taken it to have been very helpful, even though problem isnt fixed!..they are sure that the problem either lies with wiring from /to ecu/sensors or possible faulty ecu. They are having the car all of next Tuesday to do some electrical tests and arent going to charge me, which i thought was fair. He reckons its either faulty wiring (which can easily be replaced) or a faulty ecu. Guy i spoke to does sound as if he really knows his stuff, and a third party told me he was on the phone to Toyota tech people for hours when he was testing sensors etc with readouts and whatever!..they have also told him that it could be an ecu problem. So i'll let them look at it on Tuesday and see what they say.

I wont pretend to know anything about this but as suggested, i really would like to get a second opinion if it is another sensor, as i would have thought that would be the obvious thing (?)...as id much rather pay out for one of these than a silly amount for a new ecu that isnt needed!

Does anyone know of a decent garage that has done this sort of work on a MR2 roadster around West Mids or Worcs area?..i would like to try and replace sensor myself as youve kindly shown me, but would prob need someone to show me on first attempt!

once again thanks for your help

Hi Paul,

Please do not throw any more money at this until you have cleaned out the M A F sensor as detailed elsewhere on this forum.

My car had exactly the same prob as yours and all the "experts" told me it was this or that or the other

and would cost xxxxx pounds to put right.

I was then told to clean the MAF, I had a look inside it and it was mingin!

I gave it a good blast of carb cleaner, shook it dry, replaced it then dissconected the batt-ve for 10sec (to clear the light) now ok!!!

Than was 18 month and 15000 mls ago.
