How to read a VIN

1st character - Identifies the country in which the vehicle was manufactured. For example: U.S.A.(1or 4), Canada(2), Mexico(3), Japan(J), Korea(K), England(S), Germany(W), Italy(Z)

2nd character- Identifies the manufacturer. For example;

Ford(F), Nissan(N), Toyota(T), VW(V), Volvo(V).

3rd character - Identifies vehicle type or manufacturing division, D = Passenger Car

4th to 8th characters - VDS - Vehicle Descriptor Section. These 5 characters occupy positions 4 through 8 of the VIN and may be used by the manufacturer to identify attributes of the vehicle. Identifies vehicle features such as body style, engine type, model, series, etc.

9th Character - The check digit "character or digit 9" in the sequence of a vehicle identification number (VIN) built beginning with model year 1981 (when the 17 character digit format was established) can best be described as identifying the VIN accuracy.

10th character- Identifies the model year. For example: 1988(J), 1989(K), 1990(L), 1991(M), 1992(N), 1993(P), 1994®, 1995(S), 1996(T),

1997(V), 1998(W), 1999(X), 2000(Y)------2001(1), 2002(2), 2003(3)

11th character- Identifies the assembly plant for the vehicle.

12th to 17th characters- VIS - Vehicle Identifier Section. The last 8 characters of the VIN are used for the identification a of specific vehicle. The last four characters shall always be numeric. Identifies the sequence of the vehicle for production as it rolled off the manufacturers assembly line.

That should be pinned topic for future reference.

Having said that, I can't quite figure mine out.

JTILOAE9207097587

So

J = Japan

T = Toyota

I = ? It is a Corolla 16 valve Executive GL Lift back ( or should that be read as ILO ?)

AE92 = identifier ?

O = 10th character, but it is 91 reg

7097587 = it was the 7097587th off the line

Sorry if I am being a bit stupid, but can't quite figure it to my satisfaction. I have checked the numbers in my log book 3 times !

The 3rd number is for vehicle type, yours could be a 1 not an I meaning a passenger car.

D, G, K, X, 1, 2, 7, N - Passenger Car

A, B, M, 4 - Truck

B - Truck

E, L, 3 - Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (SUV)

5 - Incomplete Vehicle (typically a convertible)

So far...

JTILOAE9207097587

JTI – Japan Toyota Car

LOAE9 – Body engine model series

2 - Is the VIN Check Digit Manufacturer's Internal Code

0 - Model year Check Manufacturer's Code

7 – Assembly plant

0 - 9 - 7587 - Sequence of the vehicle for production as it rolled off the manufacturers assembly line, yours was the 7587th

:thumbsup:

Thank you. Do you have full decoding list for each block? In the post you linked it is only vaguely described.

Old thread but the original poster was referring to chassis numbers not VIN numbers. Some early model toyota's have a 5 digit model number (2 letters followed by three numbers) followed by 7 digits stamped into the chassis. For example mine is LN130-0023003. Anyone have a resource for decoding the meaning of these? I'm extra curious as the vehicle is a 1989, witch was the first model year for the first generation of Hilux Surf and these all seem like low numbers. Would be neat to know what number off the line it was :)
