Hello all. In a little bit of a delima hera, maybe one of ye has the crucial bit of info I need. First things first, I live in Ireland and the greens have gotten into a bit of power and because of that, road tax & vrt is going up from 1st july. I have a car importer friend who will source me the cxact car (gt4) from japan, but he can't gurantee that it will arrive before 1st july. The kick in the teeth is that if the emissions are over 225g/km then my road tax will be €2000 a year. If they're not then they will be €754 a year. i wouldn't mind so much but no road tax money is actually spent on the roads!!! I have a suspesion that the emissions are around that 225g/km range but can't find the info on thw web so far. Please can someone look in their owners book and see if it has this info (might be on the v5 document either, not too sure what this is tho)

see below for link to what i'm talkin about

Read the very first of the FAQ man!

Q:

I have a used car, will my Road Tax change?

A: No, the current tax rates will remain the same as they

are based on the old system. See Table 1 opposite.

Basically buy one that has already been registered in Ireland before Jan 1st...

I kno, sick of taking it up the  Thats why most of the cars in the south are bangers! The vrt jacks up the price, just impossible to have anything nice...

On cars from 0 to 1400cc, VRT is charged at 22.5% of the OMSP. So let's imagine a carmaker imports a car and wants €9,000 for it. The revenue commissioner will add 21% VAT to that, bringing it to €10,890. In order to register it so you can tax it and make it legal to drive, the buyer has to pay another 22.5% on top of the €10,890, bringing the price to a grand total of €13,340. So that’s almost €4,500 paid in tax on a small car excluding any delivery or additional charges.

contact a importer in england and ask them what charges they normally pay and then if it registered in the uk u can register it in Northern ireland, tax it and mot it in northern ireland for the grand total of about 200 quid. 1st reg in the uk needs a special mot if i remember correctly and not sure how much that costs but to register a can or transfer a reg plate or anything like that it is about 80 quid then road tax £101 and normal mot 30 quid!! 210 quid is a hell of a lot better than down there! lol check out the dvla site, im sure there is ways round it and that site helps a lot but best bet would be to speak to an importer in the uk
