mate i had the same thing happen. i will shed a little light if i can.

if you can i would go for a new engine. there are always a few up for sale on eBay and you should expect to pay about 700 upwards for a good engine. I went on to a breakers site think it was 1st choice spares and they supply breakers with ur details and they will either ring or txt u with quote as well as an email. I would want the engine to have low miles and ask for proof ie the rest of the car in their yard or something as many will quote 30k miles on it etc and for all you know it could ave been round the clock. I received a good quote from a company and proceeded to buy. when the engine arrived it was out of an old mr2 after the guy sayin it came out of the gt four st205 with the round lights!!!!! took me ages to send it back and get my money back. alot of them will lie as i found so i started asking for chassis numbers of the car it had been taken out of etc, i did this to make sure i was gettin the right engine after being sent the wrong 1! and this is when most breakers retracked their quotes and the engines suddenly disappeared! so be careful if your going down this route.

you could try the gt four owners club as a few come up for sale there. and eBay can be ur best bet if u find 1 with rear damage and you can still look at the car with the miles etc to get an idea of what condition the engine is in. it the car was mint then the chances are that the engine has been taken car of too.

as i was mucked about to much lookin for an engine then i went for the rebore route. this can b done cheaply enough if done right.

I went down the rebore and forged oversized pistons route. oversized toyota pistons are available from fensport for a cheaper price tho. when i checked with toyota their price was actually MORE than fensport.

if you are going for the rebore and ur engine is in good condition then i would advise the forged route if you want to increase power in the future.

budget yourself about the 1k mark if you want to do this correctly. if you are handy with a spanner and know ur way around the gt four then u can cut a good bit of this amount for labour.

you will need: new head gasket (i went for the hks thicker 1) standard are about 40 quid. you will need the rebore, head cheacked, crank checked maybe balanced (would budget about 300 quid for the machine work but i was offered a deal by a garage of 470 all in for standard pistons and rebore and all gaskets excluding the head. was a good price but want to forge), head bolts, oil, charge cooler fluid, over sized pistons (size depends on how bad the piston blew and how much of a score was left). u will need bearings and timing belt and tensioner etc. its a lot of work

if you are going for big power then maybe change the con rods and maybe look at better crank? front mounted inter cooler while the engine is out.

beatties can be expensive. give them a ring and see what price they give you. i rang them for a gear box a while ago and they gave me a price of 700 quid!!! ended up gettin 1 of eBay with 40k on it for 150!

there are loads of companies that sell engines on eBay and there is 1 that take them apart and check every thing and build it up again with new gaskets, ive seen the advertise a few times and the price was 900 for the last 1 with 60k on it. not a bad price for a perfect engine.

I cant remember the name of the company that did my rebore etc but that was an average price but i went with them cause my mechanic had had work done by them before. Any engine builders or engineering company could do the rebore for you you just need to find a decent mechanic that knows gt fours and wont rip you off.

Best thing to do is choose which way ur going to go ie rebore or new engine. If its a new engine it can take a while to find a good 1 and if it the rebore then you need to start gettin all the parts. I put in a new oil pump and water pump when i got mine done. I asked on the owners club what i would need and i was told i would b foolish to put the old pumps back on for some reason. to be honest i didnt look into it that much and just replaced what i could. in the end the list was: head gasket, oil filter, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, water pump. oil pump, head bolt kit, idler pulley (could hear 1 of the bearings going), tensioner pulley and new upgraded spark plugs. the company that did the rebore supplied the other gaskets needed and skimmed the head and provided me with a balanced crank if i supplied my old 1. on top of that oil and cooler fluid was needed as well as the oversize forged pistons.

my car has never run better and on tick over i keep thinkin ive stalled and that even with a custom 2.5 inch power flow exhaust! the oil looks like water its that clean.

there is the old squeek out of the suspension so new fig 8 bushes are needed and maybe lower arms and im thinkin of gettin a new power steering pump in the near future as there was a pin hle leak in it the last time i looked. also a new rear dif mount is needed as there is a knock i can hear. when that is all done then it will pretty much only be the shel that is original!

i used www.tcbparts.co.uk for alot of my parts as it was quick to arrive and good prices!
