hi there,

theres a really anoying noise comeing from what sounds like the engine. the only way i can explain this noise is like a ticking noise actually sounds like a grass hopper, but you can only hear it wen driveing past parked cars with your window down or if it is quiet i.e. under a tunnel when quiet. the noise stops when moving if i press the clutch in (still moveing with engine running either idleing of reving through the range) cant make out what it could be. anybody has any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks...

if the noise stops when the cluth is pressed in sound like it could be an gear box input bearing going get a toyota tech to road test it soon

It's the clutch release bearing, probably needs greasing, but they advise to replace the lot as the whole clutch needs to come out. Just put up with it until the clutch needs changing.

or it may be the clutch pivot point pull the rubber boot back from the gear box around the release folk arm and spray a small amount of wd40 on to the pivot somtimes rust makes them squeak . if very light pressure is put on the arm and the noise stops then give it a go

sorry for the late reply, thanks for all your feedback. Going of the feedback from you guys i took my car in for a roadtest into toyota and unbelievably the car didt make the noise  then an hour later at home it started again really loud. The mechanic basically said keep your eye on it and if it gets worse bring it back. i think i will take it back in this weekend and wait for it to get loud. its wierd because if i just slightly tap the clutch when driving the noise completely stops.

my mate seems to think its the "pilot bearing" or "spigott bearing" thats worn, if that makes any sense to you guys. again many thanks and i'll keep you updated

just thought id let you guys know, i took it into my local backstreet garage and minidoughty was spot on its the clutch release bearing. They said il get a few more months out of it before it will start to break down and i will need it replacing, they said the noise will get worse. he roughly said your talking at least £200. im gonna see how it goes as i cant quite afford it at the mo...

Thanks....

Hello all.

I'm new to this forum and in the first evening you guys have answered all my niggling questions about my car.

The most offensive is the scraping noise from the drivetrain which goes when the clutch is depressed. I've had it for a while now and, although it has not affected my fuel economy one bit, I think I might have to get it checked out.

You guys are genius!

Hey guys... same thing just started to happen with mine this past week or two.

Its only a really faint noise at the minute, which is probably why my garage didnt pick up on it!

So I'm guessing from your reply I've got a bit of time before mine goes yet :)

Thanks!!
