Knocking Noise And Warranty

My 3 door 04 XT3 (4.3?) Rav4 has for some time had the most annoying knocking noise coming from the rear door when going over bumpy roads and now its got to stop! I don't think its the lock as I've had my mate drive me about whilst listening for it in the back and the only other thing it could be is the outside panel across the bottom below the spare wheel as its slightly loose. This however doesn't seem as loud once the car's stopped and I'm wobbling it.

My questions are :-

a) Has any once possibly had anything like this b4?

B) The Rav is still under the 1 year Toyota warranty so can I get them to investigate it or at least get them to check out where its loose and tighten it up?

Having to drive with the radio on to drowned it out is getting stupid. :help:

I think this has been a topic a little while ago. However I couldn't find the topic. I've got a rattle in the back too so I threw the baby out.

Try this link;

It refers to broken welds in the back door - here is a quick look;

If you can't open the link pm me with your email address and I will send it to you.

Thanks for that pdf anchorman, certainly worth checking out if its been done. Although I can see a cost being involved if its not as my car is over 3 years old now :(

At least I've got something I can print off and take with me to the dealer this weekend see what they say. Maybe I can get them to take the door off and drive without it to see if the noise goes away :D

If Toyota will take it on they probably won't charge you but make sure first. If they do propose charging you get a price then take the print out to your local body shop and let them have a look.

What I am about to suggest is unlikely to be the case, but it is free to check and you never know .....

Is the spare wheel cover clipped on fully and properly? I had a rattle from the back and check the cover and the top lugs were not in the holes. And even when properly in, it still rattles when the rear door is pushed shut. do the same route with the cover off and see what happens.

Unless I have the same problem as you do??

Hmmm, as I remember there are a few possibilities for this one. The spare wheel carrier mentioned

above was one, as was the parcel shelf and also one of the rear wiring looms. I would do a process

of elimination. Take the parcel shelf out completely, and go for a drive and listen. Do the same with

your spare, take it off and check the carrier for rigidity. Go for a drive again and see if it makes a

difference. The wiring loom one you will have to do a search, that bottom piece of trim you ment-

ioned is not held on by much. Try jamming it with dusters or whatever to see if it stops.

I had a rear rattle in my last 4.2, it drove me freakin mad. Turned out to be the parcel shelf roller

blinds :wacko::wacko::wacko:

Good luck.

Some interesting ideas to try there.

So far I've had both the rear seats and parcel shelf out as I thought it might had been a seat rattling and no joy. I've reseated the spare tyre cover but not tried removing the cover and tyre to see if the noise goes away so thats a good one to try. Jamming dusters will be the next one I try after that. Hopefully Mr T will be a nice accommodating person this weekend but if not then using that PDF to get some second quotes will be a good one.

Thanks for your help people, worse case I could always drive with some ear defenders on :lol:

The trim on the inside of back door comes off in seconds, might be worth a look inside there as well.

Rubber mount for exhaust rear pipe fallen off hanger? (had that before, not on a RAV mind)

Watch the jamming dusters thing - helluva sticky mess. Try using marmalade - less sticky.

Rear exhaust rattling about can be an issue.

And don't tell Bitman you have a parcel shelf or he'll get jealous.

I remember once I got a new exhaust for a Citroen BX and it rattled like mad after - some of the paste or whatever they used to seal between the sections had fallen inside the box/pipe - had to have it taken off, cleaned out and refitted

Sorry, should it be "dodgy looking plank with a bit of velcro" :lol: The Rav came with it and I'm still not sure if I like it or not, is a pain when you take the seats out and you can't get to the luggage hooks that easily.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well after some messing about it looks like its something to do with the catch itself. After removing the spare wheel the noise went away but I think this was due to the weight of the wheel not affecting it. It also went when the guide the door slots into was taken off as this will have caused the rear door to pull down more on the catch.

Needless to say a trip to Mr T yielded a result of them ordering a new catch under the 1 year used Toyota warranty so this weekend should hopefully say goodbye to the noise! Annoyingly though I think they greased the lock when I took it in for its initial examination and its a bit noisier at the mo :(
