My car is due a service and i have just bought some expensive oil for my cts, the oil is Mobil 1 0-40w protection cos me £46.99 so it better be good i only got it because i saw lewis hamiltons head on it, so i was just wondering if it will be ok for my corolla if not what would be the best oil to buy.

you wont go wrong with that. i used to use Mobil 1 but tbh its overpriced if you shop at places like Halfords. you can buy the same quality at a good motor factors for half that - terry at chester auto parts is the man to see round here.

I'm currently running Millers 10W40 XSS Semi Synthetic and i cant recommend it enough...car runs like a dream on it and doesnt use any oil even with using lift everyday...

At £20 for 5 litres it rocks!!! Shell Helix is also damn good oil....

Think Millers 5w40 full synthetic is around the £30 mark for 5 litres, its bound to be good stuff too...

I would imagine you may go through a lot of oil with that 0w40 Mobil 1 stuff you bought with it being so thin???

i would never recommend using semi - 0w - 40 is what i use and hasnt used any in 42k. semi isnt stable enough and £20 is dear for semi.

Surely Semi is what Toyota recommend....i read somewhere that fully synthetic can make a noisy top end..kinda put me off it....plus is it not better to change the cheaper semi at 5,000 mile intervals than leave fully synthetic for the normal 10k???

change mine every 3k. how can something that offers more stable protection and more resistant to change cause a noisy top end?

I just had my TS serviced by my mate, who is head technician at my local Toyota dealers. He said not to use fully as it tends to make the engine leak. He just said to use a good quality semi and you wont have problems.

Also imo I think 0-40 is too thin for our cars, this is meant for the super cars

I worked at a Toyota main dealer and all the toyotas that were seviced had what was recommended by toyota(semi), but saying that, I use Mobil 1 in mine and have not had any probs.

The only cars that had fully synthetic in were the Lexus range.

Hi Guys

I'm Yats and I'm new to the owners club. I used Castrol Edge 0W30 last year on my 30k service, and was not tooo impressed. My MPG was in the Upper 20's to low 30's for most of the time. I have noticed a slight improvment in the warmer weather we are having, has anyone experienced this as well??

My 40k service (car is actually at only 28k) is due in the next 2 weeks. This time I have bought 4 litre Castrol Magnatec 5w30 on special at Halfords at just over £22's. Bought two and a fuel injector for just under £50.

As anyone else tried this oil in their T-Sports and have any comments???

I look foward to hearing any thoughts....

Thanks in advance

Yatesh

I have an angle to consider regarding oil, when cars are priced up for lease (typically for company cars use) they have an element called SMR that makes up part of the lease (the rest being purchase cost, residual value etc). Service Maintenance Repair needs to be as low as possible to keep the car competitive against its rivals, now if the oil is really expensive then the SMR will be high thus pushing the lease cost up, on a Corolla class car this would affect the rental a lot, now on a Lexus the rental will be a lot anyway so having expensive oil isn’t such an issue.

Having worked for a car manufacturer not a dealer, its easy to see why Mr T would recommend semi synthetic as its cheaper thus reducing the service cost. Making the car seem more attractive, as to whether or not semi is best for the engine is matter of personal opinion, always remember car manufacturers are here to sell cars, that’s it.

the difference between semi and full isnt personal opinion - its proven fact. you are 100% right over attracting lease customers. as for pricing what toyota charge for semi oil on a service you can buy decent full from a shop. wouldnt buy Halfords own brand oil - go for trusted names. for what Halfords charge i get much better oil for the money.

In my personal opinion Fully Synthetic should be the best option, however its expensive. I think oil choice is something you benefit from in the later years of the cars life, if you will be keeping it for a long time or you care about the next owner then buy the best, if you dont then buy cheaper oil.
