When you say its losing power? How? I wouldn’t be tryin to modify it I would be tryin to find out why it is losing power 1st.

Is the car well serviced. These cars demand an oil change often. If it is down on power are all pipes connected correctly, is the air filter clean or new (might be getting starved of air) have you checked for error codes as there are a number of things that make the gt four run in “safe” mode.

Once you have fixed the problem, what ever it is, then and only then would I begin to modify

1st on the list would be a boost gauge (stock 1 is slow and crap) then air filter or induction kit (ive went for the replacement k&n panel filter for increased flow) induction kits can involve relocating the Battery and there are a few bad 1s! ive heard bad things about the hks 1. if you are going for a panel filter then I would remove the res box in the front wing as it is pointless (apart from reducing induction noise) it is supposed to give you better low down torque and a far better induction noise. While you are at it I would remove the under bonnet padding. I think this is for sound proofing so I took mine out, lets the heat escape better, gives better noise and you get a nice turbo heat haze after it. Some people put heat reflection tape under the bonnet above the turbo to save the paint but I don’t see the need. The paint on mine is fine and no sign of the heat effecting the bonnet what so ever.

Next I would fit a decat exhaust. There are a few of these about but most people that select a full 3inch system seem to suffer a boost creep. www.fensport.co.uk have a few exhausts and down pipes. I think the mongoose system is on offer at the min for a good price. I think this is a 2.5 inch system and fitted with an aussie down pipe you should be able to avoid boost creep.

Next I would think about an electronic boost controller. I don’t have 1 of these as of yet so I can advise you on them to much. Don’t go higher then 1.1 bar tho. If you want above this then you will need to do some serious mods ie internals, forged pistons etc

Some other things to think about for better performance is upgraded spark leads and plugs? Front mounted inter cooler? etc

If you are going “all out” and want big power then upgrade the list is endless, forged engine, thicker head gasket, skimmed head and ported, stroker kit to bring it to 2.2, upgraded con rods, steel crank, lightened fly wheel, air con removal, larger turbo maybe nos to deal with lag, or anti lag, remappable ecu the list goes on

Hmmm a bit scared now... I am running an HKS SMF reloaded air filter. A bit curious now as to what negative things you have heard about them would like a heads up for anything possible.

They just let too much dirt in mate. they increase the air flow but the cleaning properties suffer. Stay away from foam filters as there are many reports of them breaking up and getting sucked in2 the engine.

There is a report on the net somewhere where they tested the induction kits and their air cleaning ability and the amount of bhp gain you get. The hks didn’t do very well if I remember correctly. Do a search on google or something. If I find the link I will post it up. They tested the k&n, blitz, hks and another 1 (cant remember the name but its well known in fact I think it came off the best)

If you are going for an induction kit rather than an upgraded panel filter then you should really be building a cold air feed box as induction kits on their own just suck in the warm air of the engine. There are many bodge jobs about the place but some have done a nice job. Join up to the owners club, im sure there is a building guide on there some where.

this is true, ive heard to check for blue smoke for turbo problems.

has the boost been turned up?? without an proper boost controller the engine can wear seriously.

has anyone done this on the 185, cause i was reading on a site about when they developed the rally car and it said they changed the bonnet to what i suppose became the 205 bonnet, because they had problems with engine bay temperatures, not sure if these problems are just on the rally car, but was wondering if this might help, or lead to paint problems

also spot on with the fix the problem part, i have always been told when it comes to modifying cars, always fix before fiddle, no matter how many performance parts you put on it a blown engine will always have 0bhp
