Corolla 1.6 Sr Cutting Out Problems

Can somebody help me?? I have got a 1998 corolla 1.6 sr which is in immacualte condition and only has 34k on the clock due to being owned by my father in law in the isle of man since new. it wasnt used very often at times and we bought it from him in january. since then when starting from cold, the engine continually cuts out when coming to a standstill. it runs fine when driving so im thinking its something to do with the choke as when cold, the revs are too low and when at normal temp, it still only shows around 500rpm at standstill.

i have taken it once to my garage who couldnt find the problem but am reluctant to go again and my missus is giving me earache now as she is pregnant and its a death trap!!

i have had a good look around the web and its possibly something to do with the iscv.

any ideas guys??

the only advice i can offer is to check a few associated sensors. get a haynes and a multi-meter and check the idle control valve, water temp sensor and so on. i have a lil issue with tick over and it was suggested to check the lambda sensor too.......

had this problem when i first bought my 'rolla, turns out to be the O2 (lambda) sensor, ask toyota for one or get a second hand one, the universal job's are a bit hit and miss. But toyota's one isn't cheap (about £126!)

Is this easy to fit or does it need a garage to do it? any clue as to where ill find this on the car and how to check if it definately that?

the best advice i can offer is to buy a haynes manual if you dont know what your doing. simple job and shows you how to test it. wouldnt go to toyota for one - cost too much.

the O2 sensor can be found before the catalyst, on the under side of the car, hidden beneath the front anti roll bars.

it's a bugger to get off but can be done with tools you have, (i.e. mole grips and a spanner)

run the car a bit before trying to remove - they come out easy then. i disconnect the plug first so i can put a ring spanner over it..... to tight to buy a slotted socket!
