does the "L" bit effectively increase the engine capacity in the higher rev range??

Its more to do with the volumetric efficiency of the engine, how much air you can get in the cylinder. Capacity doesn't change, alway be a 1.8. Just more air to burn in the same space. More air you have, more fuel you can burn, more energy you can release

i do know that the "L" stands for lift, that wasn't the question.

the question is what does the lift mean in real terms? i meant does the piston lift higher, meaning the capacity is effectively increased?

Its nothing to do with the pistons, its to do with the cam shafts. When you go onto lift you engage a second set of lobes on the camshafts, the camshaft opens and closes the valves at the top of the cylinders. These second set of lobes change when the valves open and close and how long the are opened and closed for. This increases the volumetric efficiency of the engine, it can get more air in to its cylinders basically.

It all about getting more air into the engine, same reason why you have the lovely inlet manifold on the front of the engine, not an accident that its that shape. You can dump as much fuel as you want into an engine but if you dont have any air

to burn it it will just go straight out the exhaust again
