Steering Noise

Hi

I have read lots of posts here about steering noise but quite like what i am experiencing.

I got a 03 avensis about a month ago.

I get a grating/scraping type sound when reversing in certain situations.

It tends to always happen when reversing up slight incline (I have to do this to get into parking space where i live).

Also if doing tight reversing when at full/ near full lock it makes the sound.

I brought it to a mechanic, but couldnt reproduce it very well, as was reversing on flat, he said he wouldnt be to concerned about it.

Any thoughts on whether it is somehting to be concerned about, never any noise from steering otherwise?

TIA.

HI, i'm a mechanic and I would be concerned. A grating noise from the power steering would indicate the steering rack leaking fluid or the power steering pump is on it's way out. Check the fluid level, if as you say, it happens on an incline, the low fluid could well be moving from side to side if low. Your car, is it an automatic per chance? As for bringing your car to a mechanic, you'll never get that sound when you want it, i've been working at motors for 22 years now and people will come to me saying their car has been running like s***e for a week but it's ok now, it's always the way.

Joe.

Grating noise, only appears when turning the steering maybe full lock, at slow speeds like parking: I had that reverse and forward. Occasional, then increasing regularity. I eventually asked the toyota garage to look, if they could, and toyota changed the steering column under "extended warranty" 5 years.
