A little piece from last week's local newspaper, The Orcadian (well, there is not much news to report!), does this happen often?

Fire brigade attend car fire

Kirkwall Fire Brigade were called out on Friday morning after reports of a car on fire beside Papdale Halls of Residence.

The fire, which involved a Toyota RAV4, was extinguished without incident and there were no suspicious circumstances.

If it was a petrol version....then the owner probably woke up to the fact of higher road tax bills next year ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Well, with Derv/diesel on Westray @ £1.40 litre last week, the vehicle licence looks cheap (petrol was trying not to look like £1.20, by the way). Panic about Grangemouth oil when Orkney and Shetland are the only places in Scotland that do not get oil from Fife — it comes in by boat from Wales or England!

Whilst I was away creating an alibi in Warrington, I had some of the 'lads' shift Netties RAV for her. It was an eyesore, and so is she.

It seems from your report that Nettie managed to escape from the chains inside the car.

C'est la vie.

At least she'll get the insurance - shame I didn't get the satisfaction of a ceremonial traditional burning of the effigy completed.

Older RAVs are prone to leak from the breather pipe of the tank, corrosion of the tank, and matches thrown down the filler pipe.
