Gen 7 Advice

Hi

I'm looking to buy a GEN7 (i think), i have around £5000-£5500 to spend and i want a 190,I have read some very supprising faults on here mainly about the oil problems (not very Toyota like). Anyway can someone tell me if this problem was on both the 140 and 190, also what is the face lift date and what are the diferences cosmeticly that will confirm it is a face lift model, lastly am i correct in thinking that the face lift model (or repaired pre face lifts) will NOT suffer the fate?

I'm sure this has all been covered in previous topics so i appologise for going over this again

Cheers

Matt

Hi

The oil problem is on the pre facelift 140's, but it appears to hit those pre 02 plate. I've got an 02 plate pre facelift and mine's fien (touch wood)!

The difference in looks between the pre face and after face lift, is that the pre facelift will have a small rectangle grill wilth the Toyota Badge in it. This is located at the top of the front bumper. The facelift model doesn't have that small grill, but has a long slit instead. So if it has a Badge in a grill it pre facelift.

Other things to check are:

Weak boot struts.

Bubbling/corroded alloys.

Any scuffed plastic in the engine bay (poor repair work or front end smash).

Thanks for the reply, is the 140 & 190 block/pistons different then? i thought the only difference was the Lift?

I'm 100% sure if they're different, but everyone (to my knowledge) on here who's had the oil problem have 140's.

140 with the problem isnt the end of the world anyway. just have to check it more often. but with a 190 u should be safe. exellent car!

The block is fundamentally the same, but the 190 has different pistons and the bores have special liners to cope with the much higher piston speeds. I have heard of problems with some 190s which isn't surprising considering their design, but on the whole they seem to be more reliable than the somewhat simpler and less stressed VVTi engines.
