Buying A 1998 2.2td Estate 4wd

Hi all

I am thinking about buying a 1998 2.2TD estate with manual transmission.

It is a Jap import with appros 78,0000miles

How reliable are the 2.2TD engines I have notice on eBay for example Toyotas with 2.2TD with broken motors usually the cambelt has snapped-poor maintenance or not a good motor?

The vendor says there is a 'drone' from the rear of the car, a mechanic has looked at it and can find no fault.Has the mechanic looked hard enough?

The vendor has owned the car(with the drone) since Aug 2007

What sort of MPG would one expect from this engine?

Does the car share its 4WD gubbins with the Celica 4WD?

Are there any issuses I should look for.

Please mention any good points if you own one of these cars.

Many thanks

Matt

no the corolla had a proprietry 4WD setup of it's own.

the drone may be the rear diff needing oil/new oil

for a diesel of that size and age i'd guess 40+mpg but beware that the 4wd will reduce that.

the car in question is also known as i Carib, so if you check the import forums they might have more info there.

the E11 series as a whole (the one your talking about is a CE115 C=diesel, E11= generation and the 5= 4wd version) is a very reliable car and the estate has oodles of boot space

hope this helps? ;)

Thanks for the info, after having looked at the vehicle I was lead to beleive it was a Turbo Diesel it does not have a turbo.

The car drove well the drone was more of a very loud racket which changes with road speed. Coming on/off the throttle didn't change the pitch of the noise.

There were no leaks around the rear axle casing.

One of the rear leaf springs was broken, only 1 leaf ( the largest leaf) was holding the car up, being an import would these parts be difficult to get, quickley.

The cambelt will need changing (100,000KM intervals) - are there any specil tools required to do this over and above the pins needed to lock the engine.
