4 X 4 System

A newbie question. I've searched the forum but can't find anything on this.

At what speeds does the Rav's 4 x 4 system work?

I seem to remember it is always 4 x 4 when starting off but then it goes into 2wd mode.

At what speed does this happen?

I assume that if the some of the wheels are spinning at any speed the system cuts in?

Just curious.

Hi Plutus

Your 4X4 system is permanently in 4WD. The 4.3s have a variable system but there is no fixed speed for it to gradually (it has a variable clutch on the rear axle) return to 2WD, it depends how you drive it.

I read a local papers review of the RAV4 (4.3 type) the other day and it said the XT3 model had one kind of 4WD system and the other specs had another - better - one. Is that actually right?

No they all have the same 4X4 system but everything other than the XT3 has stability control linked to the 4WD system. They call it "Integrated Active Drive".

Its a pity we cant pin pdfs (or can we mod's?) as I have some files that explain it all.

Maybe you can open this from R4W?

If you want the pdf on the integrated system you'll have to pm me with your email address.

Thanks, AM

Being a local rag, I suspected that they didn't quite describe the difference as well as they could have :)
