i was at Toyota today ordering a fan temp control switch for a Carina e - £55 + VAT  had no choice as they dont appear to be available on the aftermarket :( seen a fella that used to live near me - he's a mechanic a Toyota these days, asked him about the g/box and he said they have litterly rebuilt dozens of them. try get it booked in next week - first Toyota dealer who doesnt shy away from rebuilding boxes

Did he mention any reason why they are being rebuilt? Was he on about them failing or just the engagement problems with 3ed , damaged or worn synchromesh? Or was he on bout teeth missing from abuse?

Thanks for all the replys by the way people

main reason is the bearings failing. let them look at the third gear problem.

Do you have the pre-facelift or facelifted version. Facelifted version has uprated lift bolts which would explain why Lift feels less fearce!

No signs for me cause i didnt own the car at the time. First sign would be if it was burning oil id guess, poor seal between pistons and cylinder wall. Whats your fuel consumption like?

Hows it running when its completely warmed up?

Have had a 2005 facelift T-Sport for 1 year now with 38k miles on the clock.

Appears only to have had routine services to date, but 40k service needed

a new air filter

new pollen filter

new water pump (slight leak but will be done under warranty)

needs new front discs/pads and rear discs/pads.

mr T quoted £650.

I don't think so !

So now to get some myself and the brother-in-law to fit them ourselves,

but need to decide between standard and uprated ?

Only concern is insurance claim/premium issues with uprated brakes.

280 bout what you should be getting

Sure why dont you pop out the air filter, may be its dirty and restricting the air flow.

I wouldn't worry to much if its running ok when its warmed up fully, prob just wants a good service

650. Wow!!!

Got myself pads all round today, just parts. Came to just under 100 euro. No diff between t sport pads and standard car.

Im guessing 650 was with them fitted, !Removed! want to be!!!!

Local independent garage quoted £470 for new discs and pads all round, fitted which wasn't a bad price

but can get the standard parts for around £200.

And the cheeky sods had taken it for a 5 mile drive. No idea why as the MOT station

is in the garage. I may ask them after they do the warranty work tomorrow.
