I bought a 2000 w reg MR2 from a trader 3 weeks ago which had no warranty, this week i realise that the engine was rattling and the engine oil was very low. I took it straight to Toyota and they said the engine has problem due to driving the car on low engine oil. I am waiting for a quote from Toyota, they said it will be over 1000, Does anyone know where i can get the whole engine done cheaper or what other options i have.

Why didn't get a warranty?

Some Roadsters suffer from Pre-Cat failure, it's possible that this has happened to your car... if so, the damage isn't caused by running it low on oil, but low oil levels are a sign that it is suffering from pre-cat failure.

Pre-cat issues here

I would get it checked out ASAP, if the engine has gone, then I would be taking legal advice to see where I stand as to whether the car was fit for it's purpose... just because you don't have a warranty, your statutory rights aren't affected.. and you may have a case against the trader, however.. i could be wrong so worth getting advice.

If it turns out to be pre-cat failyre, not only will you need a new engine.. or new short block.. you will also need a new main cat.. as the current one will be goosed due to oil contamination.. if it isn't changed, you will end up needing another new engine.

The car still works its with Toyota at the moment,i've been advised not to drive it again, i'll get the full report 2moro and post it up here. The dealer couldnt give me a waranty because he said it was a part exchange car

I just found out that i am entitled to a full refund or repair of the car. I will consider going through the legal route

If it's burning oil, check out the threads on here about the problems with early versions of that engine.

If you have FSH you may find that Toyota will repair under warranty depending on the exact nature of the fault.

But I think I'd be looking for my money back either way.

Good luck.

IF you can get a full refund.. TAKE IT.. no question.

Not that these are bad cars.. they aren't, but some cars do suffer from problems.. get your money back and look for another one,, read the thread on pre-cat failure so you know what to look for and more importantly, how to check the pre-cats. It could also be worth looking on MR2roc as there is cars for sale on that site.
