I had to take Kai-Go in to Toyota last week for a quick air con check and they did their all-over check, as they do everytime you do a warranty job.

They've told me on sight that my brake pads look 70% worn after only 5,000 miles!

I disputed this, saying that I never replaced my Yaris brake pads once in 3 years & 20,000 miles and didn't expect my Aygo pads to be so worn after only 6 months.

She did say it was "visual only" and therefore not a proper brake pad check but I'm not a particularly harsh braker so naturally got on the defensive a bit. She said they would be fully checked at the 10,000/12 month service and not to be alarmed.

Have many others experienced this?

Experienced what? Excessive brake pad wear or the visual check?

EVERY job we do must have a VSR (visual safety report) done on it too. It is pretty hard to check the exact thickness/wear on pads when the wheels are on so sometimes it is best to be a little bit cautious and note the pads more worn than they actually are. The pads may well be 70% worn but as they said they will be checked at 10k service :)

There are 2 different VSR checks. 'A' & 'B'

A = car on the floor

B = car up on ramp and gets more of a check over.

If they're 70% worn after 5,000 miles and 6 months, then how do they rate their chances of making it to the 10,000 miles / 12 month service?

In theory they've got under 3 months life left in them.

Brake pads don't seem to last anything like as long as they used to. But if you're easy on the brakes then there must be a design or manufacturing fault if they really are that badly worn after such a short period of time.

The best way to tell is to keep driving until you hear metal scrapping metal then you know you need new pads.

PMSL, prob not the best advice unless you want them to fork out for new discs or a brake skim

Was told my brakes were 'corroded' at my 10k service, not sure what that means tho..lol

Posted

Rust on the discs? Mine has that too when I don't use my car for a couple of days.

Usually the rust is gone by the time I drive out of town...

Posted

Corrosion on the discs is normally nothing to worry about.

I have done about 18000 miles (and two TSS rounds :D ) and still have a reasonable amount of pad left.

Well @ 26.000 miles i can say i changed the pads twice (the 2nd time very recently) and a pegeot parts dealer told me that by 33.000 im suppose to change the discs

My boyfriend's twin brother works for Alcon who make the calipers for the Toyota F1 and Honda F1 cars I think he said, I can't remember how much exactly but I'm sure he said they were about £6,000 EACH!

need some of these:

You sure? They only last about 300mi and cost about an Aygo per wheel :D

70% worn after only 5000 miles does seem excessive. My Aygo had it's second service on Saturday and after 17000 miles the pads are 20% worn.

My brake pads were replaced at 15k. I scoot about Glasgow motorways so I start and stop quite alot espeicaly during rush hour. Hate getting caught in it, but there is no other way out of Glasgow without going through the Ghetto, and I wouldn't put the Aygooooo through that :D

As for rust on the discs, my aygo sits for days at a time during uni (locked in uni halls car park) it looks like mold growing on it.

As mentioned before, you had a "VSR" Visual Safety Report, a visual look is a gestimate at best, have a proper inspection during the 10K service and ask them to measure the "actual" thickness at the time of service

I believe that was understood.

But if their best guess is that the pads are 70% worn, and the car is only half way between service intervals, then surely it makes no sense to leave it another 6 months in the hope that the pads aren't really as worn as they thought they were. Either they need to admit that their analysis was probably wrong, or else recommend investigation sooner. Otherwise another 3 months wear at that rate means pad backing plates coming into contact with disks which is dangerous and expensive.

Otherwise they might just as well have not bothered with the VSR at all.

I'm fully aware what a VSR is, I've been a customer of Toyota (and a member on here) for over 4 years :P I am also fully aware that they do one each time, I don't have issue with this.... my issue is with their technicians eyesight.

Now bearing in mind, no I have not checked my pads and no I do not know how to, I am pretty adamant that either

A - the guy needs to go to Specsavers

or

B - They seem to be attempting to swindle a "unsuspecting" woman out of money

Either way I am not accepting this VSR and I certainly will not be changing my pads anytime soon. If I have to then it shows a fault rather than generic wear or tear - at 5,000 miles the pads should not be 70% worn, not the way I drive!

I'll be taking it in in October for the 1 year service, I'll wait to hear what they tell me then after an "actual" check. If they insist they are 70% worn or more I will be taking it up with the manager, because after 3 years of Yaris ownership, I know how much these cars can take and I doubt the pads on the Aygo are much different to the Yaris - I certainly don't drive the Aygo differently to the Yaris.

I agree with you Em, doesnt sound right compared to the Yaris!

Any way you can get a second independent opinion on it just to be on the safe side?

Posted

I agree with all of the above, maybe a word the the service manager would get them to whip a wheel off and do an actual measurement for you, if you let me know how many mm are left, I can let you know the % worn. Whoever said they are 70% worn should be able to confirm this or not FOC, just to save face. Just looking at our sales history on the particluar pads would suggest to me that they don't wear as fast as some models do
