Smell From Air Cond Unit

Switching on the air cond for the first few minutes, there would be a smell which dissipates. Does this mean the air filter is going or something else? At my last service the technician says I should change my air filter else there would be smells....

I'm no a/c expert but had the same problem on my last car (Miata) and on the Prius. Was told that it is because I need to let the outside air circulate through the a/c system after I run it. Apparently, somewhere in the system condensate can accumulate and get stale (maybe moldy) between uses if outside air isn't brought into the system to dry it out after use. That may be why the Prius keeps the outside air circulating through the system automatically when you run the a/c in auto mode.

Your A/C unit should be sanitised from time to time. Bacteria builds up in the air ducting and causes unfortunate smells (The smell ranges from mouldy wet dog fur to poo!) The pollen filter should be changed at the same time too

This is a proper trade product CLICKY HERE that we sell, but you can buy cheaper alternatives that dont quite work so well

I like the spray description....

Air Conditioning Sanitiser

The Air Conditioning on your car must be serviced in order for it to work efficiently, as part of the service, we use Forte Air Conditioning sanitiser. This works by killing the bacteria and fungus which will collect on the evaporator and in the deep recesses of the system. Easily applied, destroys unpleasant odours, including cigarettes and pets. Our Price £19.99 INC P&P

Does this mean it kills all forms of tobacco and animals in the car :o ;)

it'll definitely kill pets - especially if you throw the tin at them really hard !

If you put the aircon onto Recirc and put a steam source ( kettle, steam cleaner etc ) in the passenger footwell then the steam will be pulled through the unit and all the lovely bacterias get boiled alive !

It is an aerosol which you put in the footwell, you press the plunger and whoooosh, the whole canister is discharged. You have the A/C and fan running which then pulls the sanitiser through all the vents, killing any bacteria.

You could throw it at your pet, but I wouldnt recommend it............dogs bite

  • 3 weeks later...

Thing I've done since is to take the air filter out from the glove compartment and give it a quick dusting. There was a dead bee and leaves clogging it. The smell is now less pongy but it is still there. Should I buy a new filter or get the sanitiser thing? Or both?

Both!

You should NEVER blow out a pollen filter, they are full of nasty particulates filtered out of the air. They should only ever be replaced. The material in the pollen filter is electrostatically charged so that minute particulates are attracted to it............and Bee's
