Help! - Cv Joint Stuck In Hub!

Hi all,

I've got a 95 gen 6 Celica GT that i have just done a engine swap on. I have fittted a low mileage unit from Japan (177bhp). however when i have come to remove the CV Joint out of the hub (to drop the gearbox out) it will not move and is stuck! i have tried to pull the hub back and knock it out with a copper hammer but it does not work. Due to the amount of effort i put it to try and remove this the thread on the CV Joint has wrecked (i put the nut on to hit so i wasn't hitting the CV joint directly) and i now need to buy a new one! This is not an issue - the fact i still cant get it out is what is bothering me as i cant even put a new one in - has anyone had this issue before? Or do you know of anyone who has? I need to get this sorted and get it back on the road -i would appreciate any help you can give me!!!

Cheers, Kev

oh dear. if you know anyone with an oxy-acetylene kit you can try heating it up.

i have seen driveshafts so seized in the hub and shaft needed replacing, this maybe the only option. try trevor at TCB (toyota celica breakers, his number is on here somewhere, do a search)

Cheers Dawsey,

I was going to mention heating it up as it looks like my only option - as it is now ruined anyway i have been told to just whack it out with a 5lb lump hammer and that should do the trick!

I think heating it up is the best option though to be honest.

While you on here Dawsey - do you know what air filter/intake system is best for the 3SGE engine (93-99)? I know you have a 3S-GTE but its worth a shot! Im new to these Toyotas but from driving this one even before the engine swap (as the old one slippped a tooth and was gone basically) i liked alot of thing about it. I think im gonna keep this for a while and do a little work on it (when i get the new CV Joint that is!)

Thanks again for your reply

heat it up or use a puller of some type from the back if you can. When they are this bad to get out and you end up seting about it with hammers and stuff you will probably stress the bearing too.

ive yet to actually look this far in my celica as i really havent been that nosey about it, but can you not just remove the drive shafts from the gear box end, but im also a tad bit confused on where you put a nut on?

do you not drop out the ball joint and then start beating the ***** out of the shaft so that you can seperate your hub assembley out of the shaft ?

you can pull the shaft from the gearbox but as the cv is already FUBAR not really worth mentioning.

as for airfilter a performace panel filter will give good gains and you wont need to make a cold airbox like you would with an induction kit

Cheers for all the replies fellas,

Ive got it out now - popped it outn of the box and gave it a good old whack with the lump hammer and it popped out -just replaced the whole shaft now not just cv joint as got a deal on a good condition one for £40 (with abs ring) - not worth the messing about taking old one apart for that - just keep as spares!!

Thanks again for all your help.

Dawsey - will a panel filter give me as much BHP gain as a Induction kit would? i take it i wont get the noise with a panel filter either as the original hoses/boxes etc are still used?

will probably give better gains than an induction kit that is not in a cold air box. a lot of people fit an induction kit that sucks in hot under bonnet air and think its faster because of the sound. you wont get the same roar from a panel filter but the gains are better as the air is cooler.

Right Dawsey so basically get an induction kit with a cold air feed (Long arm induction kit etc) or place it somewehere that it can recieve plently of cold air (cold air is dense etc and combusts better...).

Have you got any recommendations for good kits that allow the cold air feed? what you using on your beast?

Cheers

rolla uses a Blitz SUS filter on a 90mm samco pipe and locates down behind the bumper.

a good filter is the APexi one not sure if it comes with a cold air feed or not though
