Problems With Ecu, Where Can It Be Fixed Cheaply?

My 2000 reg Corolla is pinking terribly and burning oil. I took it to the main dealer and they told me it's the ECU that is the problem. The cost of them replacing it though is prohibitive. I've looked on parts websites and see that ECUs can be obtained between £50-125. If I got one from the same year and version of my Corolla, would it just plug in and work?

I've also seen websites for places that say they can repair ECUs, for around £90, is this an option worth considering?

Also, I understand the ECU is located behind the glove box, what is the best way to access it for removal/replacement?

Thanks,

Iain

which type of engine do you have, the 4A-FE (non vvti), 3ZZ-FE(vvti) or the 4ZZ-FE (vvti)

an ECU wont cause the engine to burn oil. as long as the replacement ecu has the same part number it is just P'n'P but i dont think this is your issue.

does the engine management light come on? any thing else happen about the same time as the problem started
