Extended Warranty You Pay For Diagnostic Labour!

Warning to all, (or heads up) the Toyota extended warranty involves labour charges to source/find/diagnose the problem

which the original 3 year warranty does not.

These labour charges are not mentioned in the promotional literature, small print, or policy document.

So it's not total piece of mind if your ECU light comes on for example, and they can't trace the problem, or think they fix the problem

On the brighter side you don't have to pay for the actual fix, but still, you wouldn't expect to pay a penny if you pay money for a warranty.

Or am I being naive and the extended warranties on TVs/fridges/Mobile phones etc involve diagnostic labour charges?

When i exteneded my warranty on my previous avensis my local dealer did pass comment that diagnosic labour was not covered, and also trim defects where not covered. I found this out when i took my avensis in for service they asked if i had any problmes and i had a rattle coming from the dash around the trip computer they said it would cost me to find the problem and sort it out. Needless to say i sold it and upgraded to a T180.

that diagnosic labour was not covered,
I would then tell the garage don't try to diagnose the fault, just start replacing parts once you have a new car and the fault is gone no problem.

For example, the ABS light comes on, rather than find out which part of the system has a fault (spend time diagnosing it) just replace every part that could make the light come on. Diagnostic time = 0. :)

Stupid wording and rules in any system always have a work around.

If it was only that simple!

Extended warranties are insurance backed, you pay your premium and an insurance company pays out if an insured part fails. They only cover the parts insured so trim for example is not covered. The full list of parts covered will be in your documentation. In the case of diagnosis, and using your example above, you may find an ABS sensor is covered under warranty, but finding out what put the light on may involve additional checks to ensure there are no wiring or earth faults for example. In this case the dealer will ask for a diagnosis fee because he will not be reimbursed for checking it out. Of course this is a simple example but one that involves maybe stripping an engine or gearbox which may involve several hours of diagnosis

Kingo

With most warranties the customer should normally be advised that they must pay for the diagnostic charges, if the problem is found to be genuine those costs are covered by the warranty. The number of people claiming on warranty for a problem that really isn't there is amazing...

If your dealership don't cover these costs try somewhere else :)

Warrantys are a major problem for quite a few dealerships as it's amazing how many fiddles a service dept of lower morals can fiddle.....

I had this issue with a Citroen BX, ABS light came on the 1st part changed was the sensor block in the engine. This did not fix the fault, so the ECU was replaced and this fixed the fault. Warranty company would only pay for the 1st (cheaper part). I claimed the warranty covered both faulty parts they claimed it was one fault/fix and they would only cover the 1 part.

Maybe it's just my experience but I do not have much faith in any insurance product be it for a car or anything else as you always seem to have to fight to get them to pay out.
