I have just rescued a previa from someones back garden it is a 2.4 petrol 1992 and had stood there for five years. We put on a new Battery and she fired up of the key first time, then there was the smoke coming from around the dash we found out it was the radio amp under the glovebox. I have got two main questions

1) can I fit a normal sterio with some pre-built leads??

2) this is the most important, The previa failed its MOT on a spongy brake pedal, I have cleaned up all of the discs, replaced all the pads and put through three litres of brake fluid but I still have a spongy pedal. The brakes are great and stop you fine but I would like to get a more positive pedal, does anyone know if you can get a master cylinder seal kit for the previa as I have looked but cant seem to find one. I am more than capable of repairing the master cylinder but it seems toyota want me to buy a complete new cylinder and this is the only thing I can think of that could be causing the problem.???

any suggestions would be more than welcome.

Hi mate and welcome to TOC

If you've put new pads and fluid in and you've still got a spongy pedal then it could be seals somewhere, or the flexi hoses need replacing. Nip shut the flexi hoses one at a time with mole grips and retry the pedal after each one is clamped. Any significant improvement means that the clamped hose is not great !

OK, I have clamped the hoses one at a time (there are two on the front of the previa) at the bottom adjecent to the caliper and the pedal does improve but that suggests the hoses are ok because I am applying the pressure through the system right to the end of the hose. But!!!! the caliper seals are fine and have no leaks. there is a compensator on the rear of the car which seems to work ok by lifting the lever manually, if this puts more pressure to the front brakes when fully loaded could this be causing the problem if its faulty.

any help is much appreciated
