Avensis Auto - Vibration

Hi folks,

I have a problem with a 2001 Avensis CDX Auto.

The car is vibrating from about 25mph upwards, and doesn't stop vibrating until 60mph.

This is on accelaration only, and is linked to the amount of throttle you give it... i.e. thrash hard, the car vibrates hard.

Now, it's not Wheel Balance or Tracking or distorted tyres... All of these have been done/checked.

I've checked out the suspension, and there are no worn bushes, and there's no play in any of the parts that shouldn't have...

I'm pretty beat on this one!!

I went down to the local Dealership, and they told me there should be a counter weight on the exhaust downpipe pre-cat... I can't see this, but looking at pattern part exhausts online, none of them have one. So it's logical to assume i wouldn't be able to see it!! lol

Does anyone know if this counter balance exists? If so, anyone got pictures??

Cheers

Martin

Hi,

Have got a 2000 1.8 GS Avensis , and yes that counter weight does exist.

If I remember correctly is just about where the front downpipe levels out, you should see corroded lug on the offside of the pipe where the counter weight was attached. Its about 3" in diameter and about 1" thick and about 500-1000g in weight.

Found mine on the garage floor one morning - no idea then what it was - kept it for a while - no difference whatsoever to the balance of the car.

Looked in the Haynes manuals but unable to see any pics of it.

From its size etc would think that it was to stop the pipes resonating - cannot imagine its absence would cause the vibration you describe - but you never know.

Are all three engine mountings Ok? rubbers good and bolts tight - just looking at the front and rh mountings they both have extra blocks on them which I assume are for the same function - but perhaps more important if the main bushes are softening ?

Thanks matey. I was a bit dubious about the weight having that much of an impact to be fair.

I might have to support the engine and remove the mounts for a proper inspection.

The car itself is ok, but the auto "up-take" is a bit rough... Looking to sell soon, so need to sort it ASAP...

I'll let you know how i get on with the mounts.

Cheers

Martin.

I'll suggest you check both the engine and the gearbox mountings. They are the first things to check for this kind of problem. Keep us posted.
