Grill

Hi there. I caught a glimpse of a Rav4 here yesterday, was sure it was badged Rav4J and wondered about that - when I drive back past the same spot, it'd gone.

I've seen similar grilles on a US Toyota site, for example here. Might be worth a look around on that site (the grille looks similar even if the logo doesn't have the J)

Does anybody know where l can find grill like this :drool:

Help please! :crybaby:

It would actually be a pretty simple thing to do to make one up like that yourself. I am certain this grill is a home-made one looking at it (not that it looks bad - far from it!)

The black plastic part looks very standard (I had my grill off a few weeks ago for some 'blinging') and there are a couple of companies in the UK - and most likely other places - that sell grill mesh of various styles and colours that you just cut to size and shape.

I bought some mesh from Folia Tec to make up an grill on the lower half of my HR-V to stops stones flying into the Rad - this stuff here:

At USD to GBP current conversion rate that's £138.75 or €174..... Still dear for a front grill..but then again Mr T will be 3 times that cost....

Good site as well :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

I still reckon you could make your own just as good for about 20% of that cost!

TBH i bought it off fleabay for£10+£10 P+P with the idea of either color coding it or removing some of the plastic and putting chrome mesh behind it but it is a one piece moulding and isn,t quite as simple as you might think,also considered having whole thing chromed but plastic chromers are few +far between and very expensive, Also AM sugested you need to remove front bumper to fit, which i didnt fancy do-ing (too lazy).. but if you are local to M/C you can have it ,or will post for £10.. best P.M. me if anyone wants it.. :yes:

If you wanted to make a grill like the one on the pic, then you cut away any part of the molding in the cente that was proud with something like a dremel. The mesh would hide any cut marks no problem.

Looking at that gill in the pic, more and more it looks like a no-pro job if you look at the way the mesh finishes on the sides.

No idea about the 4.3, but on the 4.2 it is just a matter of removing a few screws under the bonnet slam panel and on the lower part (just need to slip your hand between the grill and slam panel once top bit freed.

I went for a bit of billet grill bling on mine but it didn't involve any surgery in my case (other then grill removal and refit)

I think RAV4 J refers to the Japanese domestic market models - look at this hand book;

RAV4JManual.jpg

For that reason I would expect to find such things on Jap sites etc.

The 4.3 grill is awkward to fit in that the bumper has to come off. Not the end of the world and if you fancy a ride up my way Stewart I will help you fit your grill. I'm surprised nobody has fitted driving lights into one yet!!!

That wouldn't be because the techdoc of fitting instructions is 58 pages long :bookworm: and it says it takes (a qualified technician) 3.8 hours - and therefore an ordinary mortal double that - would it? :crazy:

Na. Only about 20 mins to get the bumper off but it needs somebody brave enough to hack up a grill and make suitable brackets etc. I would have thought it was one for Dave M and his engineering resource.

That sounds quite a neat idea :thumbsup: - been looking at extra driving lights and sounds good. Any ideas of where to get a cheap 4.2 grill? (never seen one on eBay)

Thanks for kind offer AM, I am waiting for some stainless strips which just stick over existing grill, but as i ordered 3 months ago, i doubt they will come now so may buy T180 grill and fit that, money is a bit tight at the mo, fuel costs are crippling me, so may be a while yet, Like your idea of spots in grill have to be quite small though. do you think they might restrict airflow?

No, I don't think so. The air enters via the bumper grills as much as the upper one and in any case I was thinking along the lines of small quality lights like these Hella's;

We have had HID lights fitted to out trains and one of those is as good as two halogens. I may fit some to mine at some stage but the grill mod would look good IMO

Where have they gone!

There you go!
