Smart Key Entry System? Keyfob Confusion..

Hi Guys,

New to the forum, bought our first Prius (04 T-Spirit) yesterday. Forgive me if this has been discussed elsewhere but I've not been able to find if it has. Vehicle was supplied with 1 master key only (actually not so much a key, more of a box you slot into the dashboard!), which has a black Toyota logo on the back. After some rooting about I find there are also other versions/types available of this box, namely ones with silver logos (to work with Smartkey system) and ones with an extra (third) red button (I think these may be for the US market). Looking in my owners manual there is no mention of the Smartkey system yet there still appears to be the button under the seteering column which is meant to diable the system if rqd (unless I'm counfusing this with something else maybe!)

Does the presence of this button mean my vehicle has the Smartkey system and I just don't have the correct (silver logo) key/box/fob thingy? or was this not for the UK market etc..

Also does anyone know if the 3 button units (silver or black logo) will work with my vehicle if I buy one (£40) and take it to dealer and ask them to program it?

I'm almost afraid to ask for a quote for a new key/fob/box thingy as I'm not sure which colour logo to ask for and I'm sure it'll be fiercely expensive anyway.

If anyone has any other info on this subject I'd be grateful for some clarification..

Thanks & Regards to you all.

Smartkey system and smart entry system is only for the countries where the vehicle is designed for right-lane traffic.

So you would find this in whole of Europe except UK.

In contrast, UK Vehicle got a EV mode which when pressed will use only the Battery to run in silent mode as long as you are going below 30mph speed and enough Battery power is remaining.

So, in UK models, you don't have any button to disable or reenable the smartkey and smart entry. Instead you will find a button for EV mode which is disabled in other countries.

Why Toyota has chosen this kind of discrimination for different countries????????

I don't know.

Smart key system as chinni said will not be on your car. You should have 2 keys with your Prius.

Thanks guys,

The key fob with the black logo is the one for me then. So what is the button directly under the steering column? it has a symbol on it of a vehicle with the word "off" printed underneath.

Regards.

The button under the column is to turn of the ultrasonic inetrenal alrm.... if you are leaving children or dogs in the car.......

Push it as you leave the car, before locking it.

Thanks Trafficman, that makes sense,

As a further note I have found out that the Remote Keyfobs with the 3 buttons (for the US market) CANNOT be programmed for use with UK vehicles, they use a different frequency apparently, so if you're tempted on eBay please avoid.

Regards to you all.

Received my new keyfob today (£95 all in with pre-cut manual key). Despite insistence from the supplier and my local dealer (who wanted to charge me £50 or so) that it was only possible with the intelligent tester device, I managed to program it both to lock/unlock the doors and start the car (53 plate NHW20 model) Took about 5 mins to do.

If anyone else is interested I got the program sequence on the Priuschat forum from a posting by a guy known as "amethystjw" if you want to search it out.

Hope this is of help to someone.

Regards to you all.
