yes Dot 4. I enquired at me local parts supplier about upgrading to dot 5.1 - was advised againts as it has a bad habit of blowing the seal aroung the piston.

I think DOT 5.1 is okay. Just not DOT 5.

IIRC DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 are designed for rubber seals

DOT 5 is for synthetic.

could be wrong though.

The latest type sold by Toyota is 5.1 and is perfectly acceptable

Toyota Specify dot4. i went to upgrade to dot 5.1 and was advised against it by a very experienced parts person - he has seen a lot of cases of people doing this and the seals giving up. Funnily he owns a Toyota Avensis and lives in Chester - but wont go to Lindops ;) Even in the trade you have a very poor reputation - nuff said!

What a load of tosh.........I've been selling 5.1 for years now and never had a problem with seals "giving up"

It is especially suited for vehicles with antilock braking systems (ABS) because of the short cycle time required. DOT 5.1 synthetic brake fluid avoids the spongy brake pedal, air solubility and water incompatibility associated with silicone-based DOT 5 fluids. DOT4 is fine, but 5.1 is a far greater improvment. Another important but somrthing often overlooked is the presence of anti corrosion additives, one of the most important reasons for changing brake fluid is not the fact that brake fluid absorbs water (which it does) but that you regularly need to replace the anti corrosion additives. The cycling of the ABS system destroys the additives, so you should be thinking of changing your brake fluid every few years, even if it's clean looking!........Of course we do have a very bad name in the trade according to your 5.1 guru so I could be talking out of my :censor: I shall pass any requests for 5.1 information to your very experienced parts person as clearly Toyota are supplying a product that will just blow yer seals.............yer.......right on

i would be careful calling a respected and very well liked person with more than 30 years experience in Chester. you cant accept that your reputation is poor- and its poor for a reason.

i was about to purchase some 5.1 - he has seen this done many times over the years and has led to problems in more than a coincedental amount, bearing in mind the system is meant for dot4. Then in your reply you think we dont know that fluid needs to be changed and the reasons for changing it ;) your not even consistent in your bull5hit - so its worth upgrading to 5.1 even though it is known to cause problems in systems that it isnt specified yet when it comes to buying a decent fully synthetic oil you say dont waste your money even though it is proven that it offers more protection! priceless!!

I think you are getting your whatsits in a bit of a twist here AE102

I answered this query in the spirit it was intended (I think) 5.1 is the now standard fluid used by Toyota. I cant help that, it's just the way it is

You then stuck your oar in with a below the belt puch about Lindops having a poor name in the trade, which is of course completely untrue, maybe your experienced parts man has an issue with us that has rubbed off on you too. I cant help how he feels about us, but you should be more careful about who you think does and doesnt have a poor reputation, maybe you would like to familiarise yourself with this document, detailing our award for being NUMBER ONE Toyota dealer in the country. Despite your friend having 30 years in the job (is that all? :D:) it hasnt been with Toyota, and putting 5.1 in your Toyota will not blow oil seals, if it was such a common experience, I think I would have heard about it in my 33 years in the job (mainly with Toyota) As for fully synthetic oil, I have always maintained it is better for your car, just not worth the money compared to a good quality 5w 30 which is changed every 10K, its my opinion not yours, but if the oil is changed every 10K I bet there would be minimal benefit to installing fully synthetic, apart from the dent in your pocket

Anyway, back on topic 5.1 is the latest spec brake fluid, despite what others who dont work for Toyota think

Sounds like someone is getting confused between 5 and 5.1.

5 will blow the seals.

I was given 5.1 by the Toyota dealer and my seals haven't gone yet, do they even sell 4 anymore at Toyota dealers?

I've also come across some VERY experienced people in the car trade who get confused with DOT-5 and DOT-5.1 , easily done I spose as the numbering system is a bit confusing .

I'd recomend DOT-5.1 to replace a system with DOT-4 , don't take my word for it though , do a search on google .

I've used Lindops for about 10 years now , no compaints so far .

(please remember this when I bring both of my cars to you for a service PK  )

Thanks for the vote of confidence shazzbaa..........pop up and see me sometime ;)

The confusion between 5.0 and 5.1 usually comes from people on the non technical side. DOT4 is still available but why wear an old Mac when you have a brand new Gortex in the cupboard :D: :D: :D:
