E10 Power Window Problem

Hello I have a nice 1996 GS E10 but it has a new problem. The drivers window doesn't go all the way down( stops 2" short) and it only lifts to about halfway. I have had a look at the lifting gear in the door and when the window reaches about halfway there is a loud clicking noise like the worm gear is not connected to the motor anymore. I can lift the window and close it manually but when I do this the worm gear cable detaches from the motor. Does anyone here know of a way to fix this or does it require a new lifting mech/regulator?
