Hilux Off Road

Hi Hilux and Surf owners, I would very much appreciate some info about off-roading in a Hilux, and I start from an absolute beginner's perspective with some questions, please

I own a Rav4 and, indeed, so does my better half, but we appreciate that they are "soft-road" vehicles and aren't able to do the really clever stuff like climb (and descend) precipitous slopes in forests. We're interested in purchasing an older Hilux or similar for "recreational" off-road use and would like to hear of other's experiences, particularly in what type of Hilux to select - engine size, transmission (presumably manual) - plus anything that would point us in the right direction to start off. The type of offroading is mainly in forests, so speed is not a pre-requisite, whereas skill and a decent vehicle are

Thanks in advance

Robert

One thing, from my limited off road experiance, Autos are actually very good!!!

From getting my auto surf and a landy stuck in a field, not having to worry about slipping a clutch/stalling/wheelspinning proved a real advantage, the same applies for climbing rocky hils etc when you just want to edge forwards.

We used to run a 4x4 weekend at Motor Safari here in North Wales. Here is a short vid I put together

Please wait a few seconds for Video to load!

Auto's are good for novices but manual makes it all the more interesting!
