Grey Smoke From Exhaust?

Hi,

I've just bought a 2002 Avensis 1.8. Tonight noticed quite a bit of grey smoke coming from the exhaust - seems worse when sitting in traffic. Is this likely to be a major problem? I may still be able to return the car so any advice would be gratefully received.

It may just be condensation - what sort of trips do you do in the car? short, or long?

does it smell of oil?

So far I've only done short - 5 mile-ish journeys - to and from work. It was colder today that it had been if that makes any difference!

The engine should just about be warmed up enough from a 5 mile journey, but the exhaust probably wouldn't be (especially the back box).

It probably is a build up of water from condensation - do you notice water coming from the exhaust if someone revs the engine?

Next time you do a long run and the whole exhaust is nice and hot check it afterwards.

p.s. you mention about being able to return the car - this i guess means you got it from a dealer - if so get them to check it over
