whats the rpm differance between 5th and 6th on a corolla t-sport?

mines about 200rpm (not much point having a 6th gear)

is this about right or do i have a faulty gear?

Nope, that's right.

6th Gear is an Overdrive gear. Meant for plodding along the motorways and such. Economical thing.

Its the worst overdrive gearing ever! Its way to short, this is my only real bugbear with the Car, if it was longer i.e 30 MPH per 1,000 revs it would make it a much better motorway car (certainly quieter). However the lack of low down torque wouldnt make it responsive, but then you would change down wouldnt you.

Rant Over

I never quite get that either. At motorway speeds in sixth it sits at the same RPM as my old integra in fifth  I'm sure Mr T had a good reason for this! :D

Its prob done for drive ability reasons. If your doing 60 the car is sitting around or just above 3000rpm. I notice when i drive my car and it goes above 3000rpm the engine has more go, completely dead below that. Prob to do with the vvti funtion of the engine.

The gearbox ratio are more than likely set up to suit the characteristics of the engine. If you were driving up a hill with

4 heavy people in the car and the car was set up to rev at say 2500rpm in 6 because of the lack of go when the engine is at this rpm may mean a change of gear would be required which i would find far more annoying in a car that has 190 bhp

Totally agree Hogie, a 4cyl engine that hits the limiter near 9000 RPM will be flat low down and would always need a down change at motorway speeds, if its the price to pay for lift i suppose i'll live with it :)

i understand what you mean, but if they've gone through all that trouble and expense of putting an extra gear in there why not use it wisely and use 1st to 5th for acceleration and 6th for comfort and motorway travel and extra economy.

200 rpm differance seems like a lot of work (and extra weight for a sport car) for almost nothing.
