Brakes - Celica Gen 7

HI all,

im merely asking if anyone knows of good places besides eBay of where to get performance parts for the celica. I know there are loads of sites but i need a good cheap seller of good manufacturers. I am really looking for brakes at the moment for my 140 and was wondering if anyone knows a good place to buy this stuff. Im based in london so would be good for it to be in UK somewhere and also not eBay. Ive checked what they sell and these no name brand stuff is too much of a risk to stick on the car.

Plus if possible is this job something i can do myself? if so can someone link me to some tutorials about changing brakes and what tools to use for it?

Any ideas please jot them down for me...

thanks...all the best

I can't help you with perfromance parts as i use eBay but if you check back here 2moro i'll stick a few pic up on how to change them. If you have a 14mm spanner and a hand to hold it you will have no prob changing them. its dead simple and will take about an hour to change all four pairs of discs and pads.

I've created the post and got all the pics but unfortunatly i cant get them the way i want. I've tried to lay it out like the 56K oxygen sensor post but it won't let me.

I've contacted the guy who created that post to see how he did it.

I can either put the post up in its current format with all the pics as attachments or i can wait until he gets back to me.

What would you like me to do ?

Whichever is easiest for you pal....if you want to wait for that guy to get back to you so you can get the layout neater and more detailed then by all means its you call mate.

Hopefully he wont take too long giving you the know how....altho a website called image shack does great images for forum posts.....you may wanna check that site out

Ok mate as promised a post on how to change your brakes step by step.

**NOTE THIS IS FOR A REAR WHEEL ONLY, THE FRONT IS SLIGHTY DIFFERENT AS THE PADS JUST SLOT IN INSEAD OF BEING HELD IN WITH PIINS YOU ALSO DONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE HAND BRAKE**. (IF I GET TIME LATER IN THE WEEK I'LL DO SOME FRONT BRAKE PICS)

Firstly jack the car and remove the wheel (I take it you know how to do this ?)

When you remove the wheel you will be confronted with this.

assemblybx6.jpg

Now you need to remove the calliper by removing the two 14mm bolts in the back of it (these might be very stiff depending upon the last time they were removed and if the last person to fit them was a hairy a***d gorila lol).

bolt1vp6.jpg

bolt2sg0.jpg

Once you have removed the bolts simply lift the calliper off the disc and support it. Do not let it hang by the brake pipe!!

To remove the pads you have to pull off the 3 retaining springs (note which way they fit on)

pinsandspringsiw7.jpg

Next pull out the two pins which go through the pads and they will fall out.

pinremovaloo4.jpg

Before you fit the new pads you will have to push the brake piston back into the calliper to allow for the new thickness of the pads. To do this, just get a set of stilsons around as shown in the pic and squeeze it back into place. It should go back fairly freely but if it does not you have two options. 1 take off the brake fluid reservoir cap and try again. 2 If that does not work you can open the bleed nipple and this should allow it to move with ease. Close the nipple (if you have to open the nipple you may need to bleed your brakes afterwards !!!!)

stillsonsup5.jpg

To fit the new pads first put some copper grease on the back of the rear pad and a little on the anti-squeal plate.

padscm7.jpg

Place the anti squeal plate onto the front pad and place them both into the calliper.

Place the two pins through the calliper and pad.

Now align the rear pad and push the two pins all the way through.

Fit the 3 retaining spring in the correct orientation.

springfittmenttv7.jpg

If you want to change your discs also then simply try and pull them off (your handbrake should be off).

If they do not come off easily then now you have to remove the little black rubber bung on the front of the disc.

Once you have removed it rotate the disc so the hole where the bung was is at the six o'clock position.

bungholeaw2.jpg

Look through the hole and you will see a little gold cog. This cog is the adjuster for the hand brake shoes.

Rotate the cog upwards several turns using a screw driver or key (whatever you have to hand really).

This should allow the discs to come off with ease.

cogrd8.jpg

To fit the new disc just slide it on with the hole in the six o'clock position and move the gold cog in the opposite direction to before.

To ensure you have turned the cog enough simply try and rotate the disc it should spin fairly freely. Now put the hand brake on.

slide your wheel on and try to spin it. It should not move no matter how much force you use.

If it does move then adjust the cog accordingly, likewise if it doesn’t not spin freely with the brake off. If all is good, refit the bung.

Now to fit the calliper.

Remove the wheel again (duh !)

slide the calliper over the disc and align the bolt holes.

Fit both bolts. (Note one is longer than the other so make sure you have the right bolt in the right place).

Now your brakes are back together you need to test them.

Get a mate to put the brakes on (they will prob need to pump them once or twice), and watch to see if the piston moves. If it does once again put the wheel on and try to move it with the brakes on. It should be impossible to move it by hand. Now release the brakes and spin the wheel, it should move fairly freely.

If in the unlikely event you had to open the bleed nipple then you will prob need to bleed your brakes before fitting the wheel. (not going to go into that with this post though).

If all is good then fully fit the wheel and job done.

As you can tell this post assumes you are not changing the calliper or going to use different size discs.

Now for the legal disclaimer - This info is for reference only, if you choose to follow it , any damage caused is your own responsibility. All work should be carried out by a suitably authorised person ect ect blah blah.

So nobody try and sew my ***** if it all goes Pete tong LOL.

Oh yeah it will take a while for your new pads to 'bed in' so take it easy for a while as your brakes will not be able to stop you as efficiently as before until they are fully worn in.

Hope this is of some use to you and good luck. If you need any more info just PM me.

You've just missed a group buy for EBC discs & pads on celica-club.co.uk run by 'kelv'.

kelv did say that he can still give discounts to members who missed it, might be worth dropping him a PM.

I went for the grooved & dimpled discs + redstuff pads allround on my 190 & can highly recommend them.

Sounds reasonable - cant argue with that price...... i need to keep my eye on these deals more closely......where do you say they sell these things?...is it on this forum or somewhere else???

Thanks again Gazbrown.....i would appreciate at some point seeing a detailed post like the last one for the front brakes as well......you have saved me loads of cash from taking it to a mechanic to do these. Im sure loads of people appreciate your time and effort to explain how to's for brake changes in this forum not just me

You need to register at http://www.celica-club.co.uk & kelv will give you a 10% discount on EBC brakes.

Look at the 'group buy' forum, prices & contact details are all in the EBC thread http://www.celica-club.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=64151

Also have a look at the 'installs' section on http://www.newcelica.org/ for lots of diy guides.

  • 3 months later...

ill just throw my 2 pence worth in here, i just fitted ebc dimpled and grooved with green stuff pads all round (cost £364 ish)

should your brakes not come off easily grab 2 m8 bolts and screw them into the 2 threaded holes on your disk, this should jack it off, and maybe a handy hint which i found helpful was to put the new disk on hold it tight to the hub and tighten the cog back on so that it stops the disk from moving.

the front is a bit more of a tease because when you fit the new disk its not screwed to the hub like some conventional cars, its not until the wheel is put on that it begins to sit in the hub, im not sure if there is a a little groove that holds it in place or it just relies on corrosion to make it sit better,

other than that its a ***** easy job to do on my past car when its been screwed to the hub and the little counter sink has rounded off ive had to drill and retap the hub, or when the disks are welded on ive had to snap the disk by smacking it senseless with lump hammer.

but anyway price guide on brakes all round

brakes and pads from £364 http://www.brakes4u.co.uk/forms.asp

front anti squeel shim £16.

rear anti squeel shim £9

Rear caliper locating pin £1.74 each

rear caliper springs ( £4. ish) (note that spring kit does not contain the spring that fits into the holes on the locating pins these are only the ones that go underneath the pin and into the hole in the brake pad

GAZBROWN.... did you get chance to do a crib sheet from the front brake disc and pad replacement? If so can you post it on this post at all? Need to do both front and rear brake disc & pad change soon, so think it will be helpful if you have it.
