Oil Consumption Problem

Hi there,

My 01 Gen 7 has the dreaded oil consumpition problem and Toyota wont cover it under warrenty as it doesnt have FSH.

Just wondering can it be fixed or is the only way to sort it is to get a replacement engine? Either way its gonna be a big hole in my pocket!

Gonna bring it to a few mechanics and see what they say, i would like to have an idea of what is causing it so i can explain it to them.

Im afraid my exhaust system is knackered as it sounds a bit Tinny on low idle, cant imagine that is gonna be cheap either.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The classic oil fault is that the cylinders wear to an oval shape due to oil sludge behind the rings.

I don't think there's a solution other than a re-bore with new pistons and rings. The usual fix, as you know, is to replace the short engine as that covers those bits. Short engine replacement is probably the better solution as it would mean you're starting with a new crank and bearings, so can ultimately expect longer life from the unit, but you might find you can get the rebore etc done a bit cheaper if money is tight. If there's not much in it, then I'd definitely look at getting the new short engine, or at least having the whole thing refurbished.

The "tinny" sound you mention could be just the Heat Shield that has come loose, this again is very common on the Gen 7.

A 48,000 mile 140 Engine has just been offered for sale by Mabbs on TOC!.

Topping it up all the time is not as bad as it sounds anyway, unless its really drinking it i suppose. mine got the same problem and is very thirsty but i just brought 10 litres of eBay and keep dumping tht in every so often cost me £40quid lol alot cheap than a recon unit

I'd Say it is using about 1.5L per 1000 miles, goes from the max mark of the dipstick to the min. I dont know exactly how much that is. I do just over 1000 miles every month. Its running perfect, doesnt skip a beat, no loss of power or anything like that, 68K on the clock and its been like this since it was at 52K. Im worried about the Cat, i'm hoping I dont have to replace that with all the oil being chucked over it. I have my NCT (MOT) in a few months. im hoping it will pass the emissions test. I may get an emissions test to see how it is doing.

Any suggestions on what i should do? Just keep topping it up or Shell out a few thousand on getting it fixed? what kinda money are we talking here?? Have a few quid spare at the moment, a holiday or fix the car!

There is a place in Dublin where they replace engines from used units brought in Japan, think it cost about 1500 euro but god knows what kinda state the engine will be in.

I recommend API Engines as they did a good job on my car and talked me through everything afterwards. The full job was 1850 including the engine and a couple of phone call chasing aside they were spot on and the engine is fine now. Just go on the website and see what you think.

Sorry to see you are another victim, im still a little sore after my engine replacment a month or so back.
