Easy Fit Cordless Reversing Camera And Screen

A good point from Dave.m there on showing the edge of the bumper.

Just as you have your door mirrors showing a bit of the door as a reference, I think it is important to try and do the same with the rear camera. I have a clear rear view with my camera but do not have that reference point so it is not as easy to use as it should be.

I fitted mine last week. Threading the wires from rear door to wing via that flexible hose was a nightmare! It took absolutely ages before I managed to get a probe wire through to pull the camera wire through. Even then I had to go via a hole I cut through the side of the hose inside the wing.

Also, my wiring was nothing like that shown above in the wing! There was absolutely nothing in the lower hatch (as pictured) and I had to access the wires from the upper hatch by disconnecting the bulb and tapping in near to it. The black wire was live.

Haven't decided where to mount the monitor yet. Probably just left of the steering column slightly above the cigarette lighter.

I am going to reconnect the camera so that is always on with the ignition if I can. I guess that will need me to run a wire over to the power socket on the LHS wing? Any ideas?

I so want to add a camera too!

Right now, Im pouring over the pros and cons of CMOS v CCD, IRLED vs No IRLED, cheap vs not so cheap. Google can sure sap the best part of an evening!

BTW, as an external mod, does this affect your insurance? ie, do you have to disclose the fact you have added something that may be on the outside.

As a CCTV security systems engineer I can advise you that it really wont benefit you whether you have Infrared or not unless you use a Mono (Black n Whte) camera as B/W cameras see Infrared.

As far as the Image sensor goes, Its a reversing camera, it doesn't matter, get a half decent camera with at least 420 TVL (TV lines) and you will have a decent enough picture to reverse with. Remember that your Reversing and Brake lights give off light at night and can help the camera see better.

A day/night camera which switches from colour to mono when the light level drops can get confused from the reversing and brake lights at night and may switch from mono mode back too colour and take a second or two too adjust the iris.

An Infrared Mono camera will work great at night but will be Mono in daylight too.

On my work van I have a cheap 380 line colour CMOS camera wired into the 12vdc reversing light.

The reversing light gives off plenty of visible light too see anything behind me and I dont have problems from the lights at night as the camera is still in colour mode.

To put it simple, Get either a Colour camera and rely on the revering lights at night and enjoy a nice colour picture in daylight

Or get a Mono camera with Infrared LED's and have a better picture at night but a Mono picture in daylight,

Remember too use 75ohm cable if you wire straight from the camera to the monitor and not use telephone cable or any other multicore crap (unless 75ohm) .

Hope this helps

Ok, since I'm back in a Rav, I thought I would update this thread.

As before, this little cordless kit comes from Maplins ( it's actually the one from my Urban
Cruiser) for a reasonable £80 or so. So the installation is as above but with a few little
differences. I decided that as this is an add on I was going to do as little Intrusion / damage
as possible, so this means no drilling panels and as little removal of panels as possible.
So quite a little task I have set myself then. So first off the camera, I removed it from the
fixing bracket and using sticky Velcro, stuck it the middle of the trim above the tailgate .

Feed the cable through the trim into the tailgate, and then through the trunking into area
where the rear lights are. One cable connects to the reversing lights, and the other to the
cordless sender unit which I have stuck in the boot area. Refit all trim.

Next the screen, and this is where you can do the job without drilling holes using sucker
mounts or ought else. After a lot of thinking re position, how to mount etc, I had a brain
wave. I decided to mount it straight to an accessory plug and have lt plugged in permanently.
So I shortened the cable, re soldered it, and cut the camera mount bracket to use as an
L shaped bracket to fix the screen. Then using a hot melt glue gun, I stuck L bracket and
screen to the plug. It helps to use a cable tie first to keep parts together. So there we have
it, plus side, parked in a dodgey area? Pull it out stick it in glove box. No dash Drilled, no
suckers mounts no damage. The down side, on my last Rav, because I had the camera
in the number plate light, I had a point of reference because I could see the edge of the
bumper and about two feet back of the road behind. Because the camera is mounted
inside at the top of the window, with the camera mounted as steep an angle as I could
get it, you can now see everything behind, but the closest to the rear bumper you can
see is two feet. So I guess I need to get used to fact I can be a safe two feet away from
any object unless I decide to risk going a bit closer.

Now here's the problem, doing this from my I pad and never uploaded photos before,
I can't work out how to do it so will post them tomorrow from my work PC. Or maybe
I should just R T F M !!!!!!

Photos now added, apologies for poor quality, I pad camera not so good when light is fading.

Hey Dave, I may need to pop up and have a look at your install as my new car that I'm picking up on Thursday (woo woo! :) ) doesn't have a reversing camera (boo hoo! :( )

Not telling yet as I will be thrown off the TOYOTA forum once revealed :D

Hi mate,

It's approx 90 mm, pity your local Maplins don't have any in stock. I was in their East Kilbride store yesterday

and sneakily opened up the box. The current kit is better than mine as the screen is a lot slimmer and the

buttons are out of site, and its reduced in price.

PS, it's a HONDA then.
