Just took my car in for some service, and we had to remove the airbag, my brother (the Toyota Guru) said that it is mechanical triggered, and will work even if you remove the Battery, but as a firefigther, I was told that if you cut the cable to the Battery, any airbag wouldn't work - so here's my question

How does the Carina E airbag work? Just mechanical, or is it disabled if you remove the Battery cable?

Hope you've got the answer :)

Hi, i've just broken up a carina for spares and took a leather steering wheel off

complete with airbag with no probs after it had been sitting for a few weeks

without a Battery on.

However, it does say in the haynes manual to be careful as it can be triggered

even with the Battery disconnected, upon looking at it, it does look mechanical.

The air bag goes off when the sensors at the front of the car detect an impact. You could call this mechanical as the sensors become deformed on impact. This sends a signal to the air bag ECU mounted near the centre console, and the air bags deploy. The trigger is electrical but the actual air bag has the firing module built into it, so if working on the car you should disconnect the Battery AND you must be careful when handling the air bag off the car. Just for additional information, we have to have an explosives licence to handle them, similar to anybody stocking gunpowder (fireworks) etc. They have to be stored in locked steel cabinet until ready for use

Kingo
