Just bought myself a Rav 4 2.0 XT4 on a 05 plate. On browsing the topics in this forum I have seen a lot of comments on models such as 4.1 , 4.2 , 4.3. Could anyone explain what model is what to me?

cheers

Rav4.1 is the mark 1 from 1994 to 2000

Rav4.2 is the mark 2 from 2000 to 2006

Rav4.3 is the mark 3 from 2006 onwards

thats what I believe to be true but as a newbie owner I will await the priase / wrath of someone who is sure of the answer :)

Ye puir misguided soul -

the so-called RAV4.1 was the original 4 wheel drive originated to complement off roading driving, performance and on-road comfort. The 3 door was exceptional in this new arena and led the way in what was a field of previous Daihatsus; Suzuki Jimnys; and associated basic jeeps.

The longetivity of this vehicle is a testament to its build quality, and there were few recalls on this model.

The 4.2 introduced the VVTi engine which has been well used in other Toyota cars, and saw the first signs of the concept succumbing to dumbing down. The move towards car based concepts commenced and off-road capability began to reduce. More emphasis on 5 doors and diesels further diluted the original concept, no doubt to attract a bigger market and become more user friendly for Chelsea Tractor drivers who didn't live in Chelsea.

The 4.3 versions are a further dumbing down and we see little off road capability, and a further reduction in performance as the weight gets piled on for airbags, 5 doors, and lots of other things like ABS, air-conditioning (in the UK?), and complicated electrics etc - which can be seen from the number of posts on here relating to 4.2s and 4.3s.

I fondly remember being able to drive my RAV4 3 door up the 5 steps of my hotel and back down again with no worries on crunching anything on the car....even with 2 wheels (front and back) on the top step and the other 2 lower down.

I don't mind folk having 5 door dieselly motors or even petrol, but lets not pretend they compete with the original RAVs - the bumper and trim show that these new versions are cars.
